If you hired a lot of Allied Generals, that could be the cause.

Indeed, number of settlements will influence the number of children that can be born. If hired generals, allied ruler, adoptees and husbands of your daughter take all those places, you don't get any newborns.

I've got something like 400 family members for about 200 odd cities, is that even possible? I thought the number of fm's to cities was hard coded to a 1:2 ratio. I sitll have new fm's being born, have numerous generals and habitually bribe other factions fm's.

The number of male FM's should slightly over 1:2. Your total number is of course higher.

Capturing 200 and something out of 199 settlements in total (with only 198 that you can actually capture - Terhazza cannot be reached without cheating) is quite an achievement.

I thought I saw the number 200 somewhere. I was obviously mistaken, but I appreciate the sarcasm lol. Regardless, I have 121 cities to 307 fm's.

You have nearly 3 generals for every city?
Is this possible - or is this from the ingame statistic where woman are also included afaik?

AFAIK even allied generals and client rulers count in that statistic.

Ah, that would explain it then.

In that case, should I stop bribing other factions fm's and hiring generals so as to produce my own? I do keep having 'children' born every now and then, but will this increase if I stop bribing and hiring generals?

The more provinces you have, the more babies you'll make.

This is to make sure that great factions have enough FMs to manage their provinces, while small states don't have halfstacks of FMs bodyguards.

    That's really odd.

My suggestion is jut to wait it out. It takes time to make babies in this game.

I learned that the hard way in my sweboz campaign... if you want your battle hardened generals to sire some lawful childrens with their wife, they must back at some peaceful cities and govern that for couple of years, so they won't look at those slave women and women that they capture from cities to cities...

oh yeah, and don't forget to put him on beer too, taverns seems to have good effect on your general's virility (but don't over-taverning him, that was bad for his management skills)
