Default Total Newbie: Jeez after a few turns, not much left! What now?

Having decided to try a new experience on TWCENTER, away from Empire and Napoleon, I chose your Mod.

It's been a L O N G time since I played Rome, maybe 5-7 years? And then only vanilla. BUT I did play it for 2 YEARS solid, but only on medium settings and limited armies, as pc's then were limited to what we have available now. I obviously loved it then, but moved on, and now I'm back!

I'm playing on Windows 7 (64), 8 gigs ram, and 1 Gb Radeon, so I whacked up the visuals to max and tried it.

I read a lot of the posts before I downloaded it, so I had an idea of what to expect.

VERY impressed with the professional installer, and patch 1.2. Liked the intro movie.

BUT HOLD ON!! I'm playing on Hard/Hard, and the pace is FAST... I think I've only end-turned maybe 3 or 4 times and I've already lost 6 towns... NOT MUCH left of my Empire... if this goes on for a few more turns... I'm xxxx'd!! I'm already 12,000 in debt... and NO GOVERNMENT to bail me out!!

Are the Roman troops useless at this stage of the game OR am I a really bad player, or is this usual?

    CONGRATULATIONS ON THE MOD

Hello. First I suggest you read house rules. Then switch difficulty to M/M, then use script and read up guides on how to survive first 15 turns. otherwise, you are done for. Its tough, but rewarding!

SPQR is for the player that wants realistic battles and hard campaigns. It takes skill and learning for you to Master SPQR. You need to do reading see whats changed and HOW to play to win, even then its rough road. Most new people or vetrans of RTW vanilla or other mods find SPQR too hard. But it isnt really, just takes time to learn how to play more realistic. The Factions may not be the most realistic compated to EB or RTR but the Battles are and the campaigning is. Logistics are just as important as skill on the battlefield. You have to PLAN ahead and invade with Force.

I hope you will keep at it and enjoy this mod. BTW its perfectly balanced for M/M setting if you use higher you wont enjoy the game.

Default Re: Total Newbie: Jeez after a few turns, not much left! What now? UPDATE: getting this to work now....

After a few false starts, a reinstall after I'd messed up the preferences file..
... getting slaughtered maybe 3 times, I finally got it together.. by following the "what to do in the first 15 turns".. and double-teaming on Hannibal.

1st battle with Hannibal, he beat my first Legion (Quintus?), but I'd severely wounded his army.. my 2nd Legion (Flavio?)... then finished him off. I killed the enemy general (Hannibal?) .. does that mean he is DEAD, or like in Napoleon... does he rise again in a few turns??

I've the music going around in my head... dum dum de dum de de dum dum... and I've THOROUGHLY ENJOYED MY EVENING... THANKS TO ALL THE MOD TEAM

Of course (such is Life!!) my pc then decided to CRASH.. because something somewhere was "updateServ.exe"... BUT I'D ALREADY SAVED MY GAME...

Will get that sorted. Off to bed now... sense of VICTORY finally

    THANKS VERY MUCH
