    Default Decimation

I know that it probably won't be a feesable option because of hardwired systems in Rome for EB1 and MW2 for EB2, but I thought it would be really cool to introduce a 'decimation' option for your defeated armies.

You'd fight a battle, lose, then a screen could come up giving you the option to ignore the crimes of your cowardly troops, flog them, or decimate them.

Decimation would reduce unit sizes by 10%, but add 2 or 3 chevrons to the unit to represent their fear of failure and punishment in the future, and therefore their increased willingness to fight to the end.

It's just an idea, and I think it might possibly work for MW2 because of the 'ransom, release or execute' screen. What do you think?

Modern Warfare 2? I don't think it would work on that, lol.

Not possible on RTW, i'm afraid.

    Not possible on M2TW either.

On top of that, you could argue that decimation was a much too rare an occurence to be implemented as an always available option.

    haha sorry I mean't M2TW

    Why wouldn't it work?

And I take the rare occurence point, but still, commanders did always have the option..

Not really... Only rarely would such a drastic measure take out for the better.
Desertion or even mutiny and murder would be the fate of a commander who saw decimation as always an option.

I see your point. Although, hypothetically if it could be introduced into EB2 somehow, you could introduce drastic morale penalties and horrible character traits for a general who used it more than say, 2 or 3 times. Sort of like the 'dread' and 'chivalry' meter in M2TW?

The hardcoding of the game wouldn't allow it.

It was used so infrequently (Ceasar used it during his campaign to pacify Spain) it really is inconsequential.

This is kind of like the "Soviet commanders would shoot retreating or hiding soviet soldiers on the spot!!" myth.

Both happened about 3 times in history, but everyone likes to think that it was standard practice.

It is not because something is well known, that it must be included.

Marian and Imperial Legionaires are the best line infantry in the game. 200 men with high morale in an ordered disciplined formation.
Besides, the famous discipline of the Roman army could mostly be seen in things that can not be shown in TW games: the building of camps, bridges, roads,... at an unbelievable rate.

But all 'civilized' units in EB are in ordered formations. No unit 'breaks' formation ever, so that can't be a sign of Roman discipline.

You're right about the discipline of the legions being shown in their logistics, but Roman armies don't get discount when building forts, or any marching bonuses, so how is their discipline actually shown?

By not running away. Just like everyone else.

Well, those Romans are just line infantry. But they have the same morale and discipline of elite soldiers.

So yeah, do usually don't run.

Rolling Thunder, I don't know what difficulty you are playing on, but mass routs are very easily to get in EB. It just takes a little bit longer because units die less fast. But with one charge in the back any normal unit that's down to 3/5 of its strength is routed instantly. Usually the morale of the neighbouring units drops and off they go.

That's the way to beat phalanxes really, you just need to focus on one every three or four units.

Marians are another story... That's like fighting elites... There main stats are less good of course, but they are well armoured and have almost two times as many men per unit.

Ive thought of the following scenario.

Army is sitting in a city, commander, wants to decimate, a riot occurs in the city next turn (by script, public order goes to normal and no citizens are harmed, set number of soldiers die, and general stays alive while getting negative traits.) can this work?

That sounds do-able. I think decimation would be a cool little feature to put in

Why yes, every time me and my friends go out, we start off the night by killing one of us. You won't believe how hard we party after that.

Too bad the group is dwindling away for some reason.
