It's pretty informative historically, but not all of it is accurate.
Well, it's not like those information could not be found in a book. The only advantage ancient history documentaries has over books is that there is more visuals.
Sometimes, I really wish that documentaries starts introducing ideas that is currently being debated among historians, as well as break new ground by covering some specialised topics.
Instead of simply covering the Roman army of the late Republic/early to mid Empire, I really wish they could start doing a documentary about the Late Roman army, as well as the transformation of the Roman army all the way till the Byzantine era. Some discussions on why the Roman army changed and why there was a need to adapt would really be helpful to the general public.
Yes, most people think the romans were in thier polished paper-thin LS all the way through
No, most people don't care!
I try not to be overly critical when it comes to these types of documentaries since one have to remember who they are produced for, who their audience is. And the whole purpose of documentaries such as The Dark Ages or Rome - Rise and Fall of an Empire is not to accurately portray the armour used by the Roman armies from different eras, but to give the historically interested general viewer an insight into these ages. The whole reenactment/acting stuff is there only to give the show some more visually appealing look, which otherwise only would feature a bunch of not too attractive historians talking into the camera. We all know Adrian Goldsworthy is one very handsome and attractive man - but the rest of them? Well, I must admit that that chubby fellow with a beard and southern accent ( or whatever it is ) is rather OK.
And I must say that I rather take a documentary about Rome with some bad props rather than that horrible series about ancient battles done in the "300" style. Or yet another awful "documentary" ( yeah, right... ) about some fishermen or ice road truckers. Or yet another show about how the world is going to end and bla, bla, bla...
Me too... Why do you like adrian goldsworthy so much - I mean are you like - gay?
Just sayin' it's like, awkward.
Try what? Im scared....
Oh... My... GOD!
