Hey guys, I'd like to get some recommendations for TV series, movies, dramas, etc with a focus on Rome, either Republican or Imperial. As the summer comes to a close, I'm finding myself with more time.

What I have seen so far:

I, Claudius, Gladiator, Augustus (Peter O'Toole), HBO's Rome.

I don't know if you're interested in historical fiction Roman books, but Steven Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa series is very good, as is his novel Roma. The sequel, Empire, is coming out in a few weeks. All are excellent books. Enjoy.

At OP I recommend some of the Eagle Novels. Heres the first in the series.

    Augustus (Brandon O'Toole)
Do you mean Peter O' Toole? Because if you do that movie is an avoid-at-all-costs situation. Absolutely atrocious.

Peter O'Toole does a pretty good job as Tiberius in Caligula. But that movie is pretty much just a random sequence of pornography, and a few scenes of top quality acting, it's also the same set as HBO Rome which is pretty cool.

Really? I thought Rome was needlessly prudish in too many instances. Censorship by elderly beige repressive people tends to cheapen creative visions to a horrific degree, thankfully Rome avoided this...............mostly.

Also "I, Caudius" is something that can't be missed.

Some classic movies set in the Roman time period are 'Cleopatra' and 'Spartacus' as well as 'Ben Hur'

I was trying to stay away from the "epics" as much as possible. Generally I'm uninspired by the vintage Hollywood films.

    HEATHEN!!!

This is my personal irk. I love em because they have more to do with story than action, but to each their own. Unfortunately, unless you go vintage, you aint gonna be finding much Roman films.

I guess there's also; King Arthur and Warrior Queen. But man, can you really hold those up against the 'vintage' movie. I say not.

    Maybe because they're
    a) even more unhistorical (what with Saxons from China) and
    b) worse from an artistic perspective (at least King Arthur).

    Can't disagree there...

Man I wish filmmaker's would stop wasting their time with pathetic Hannah Montanah films and write something that is actually interesting.

British series on youtube, it's called Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire

it has episodes on several key moments in roman history, they're quite good

Actually that BBC series is quite terrible, I remember watching it a while back and just being amazed that this was actually being made and sold by the BBC.

There was a two-part TV miniseries on Caesar a couple of years back, it wasn't terrible. The guy who was one of the cops on Law&Order's last seasons played Caesar. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284741/
