I'm a picky person with music, and I need to find some new artists. But there are so many that its hard to find the 'good' ones. So much searching without results.

I like metal mostly. But not just any metal. I dislike excessive screaming vocals, opera singing, and death metal growling. Metal instrumentals are the best, because they avoid a lot of problems that many songs have. I like when the music has a melody to it, and is not just some guy playing the guitar as fast as he can. I like music made with any instrument though - guitars, drums, keyboards, strings, and whatever else is used, as long as it sounds decent.

    For examples of what I like;
Apocalyptica - pretty much everything they have made
Rammstein - most of their music
Metallica - a number of songs, but my favourites are Orion, Call of Ktulu, and One. Suicide and Redemption is good too.
Korn - a lot of their music

I also like the sound of Cannibal Corpse *without* the vocals, like this song, before he starts barking with cancer lungs.
His Dethklok shirt reminds me - I like Dethklok, because the vocals aren't irritating like Mr. Cannibal's are. Also, there is progression and a story, often with humorous elements.

*Heavy* heavy metal and symphonic metal are my favourite categories. Its just so hard to find good music without awful vocals.

Thanks to anyone who happens to have examples.

The first band that came to mind was Mastodon, especially with Leviathan. The album as a whole tells the story of Moby Dick.

Crack the Skye might also work, as well. This album instead is "a story dealing variously with the art aesthetics of Tsarist Russia, astral travel, out of body experiences and Stephen Hawking's theories on wormholes."

Since you said you like instrumentals, Pelican also came to mind, although they're more technical than Rammstein or Metallica.

And just because I feel like it, Baroness.

This isn't, strictly-speaking, metal, but I just wonder if you might like this...

Rodrigo y Gabriela. They're a Mexican guitar duo who do mostly Latin-style music, but both have thrashmetal backgrounds and do some really good covers.

    For instance:

I like a lot of music, it just depends so much on the artist. I like some classical, 'Latin', plain old rock, some techno...

So far I've liked everything posted here.

    Danke

If you have eclectic tastes, may I suggest CATcerto, by Nora the Cat and Mindaugas Piečaitis. Piano solos by Nora, orchestral arrangement by Piečaitis.

In that case, continuing the 'metal with a twist' theme, I'm going to suggest Apocalyptica:

If you like Pelican that Socrates recommended i also recommend Isis and Russian Circles.

Also, while not very metally if you like industrial rock I certainly always recommend Nine Inch Nails
