    Default Help editing unit limits

I was trying to edit the unit limits of a few units from the "Units of America" add on useing Pack File Manager. If I edit in patch pack2 the changes work except I dont have the new units from the American add on. Those are in Patch Pack 3 and any changes I make in that patch pack dont take effect in the game. Example: Rogers Rangers (from special forces add on) are in patch2 and when unit limit is changed from 1 to 2, I can now build 2 in the campaign. Frasers Rangers (from the American Units add on) are not in patch2 but patch3, when the unit limit is changed from 1 to 2 in patch3, it does not take effect in the camaign.

So what do I have to do to edit the units from the American... add on?

Yes, CA seemed to have made that DLC patch uneditable on purpose. But I read about people finding workarounds for this problem. Try searching these forums for their comments about it. There might also be some useful info for you (posted 9 December, 2009) near the bottom of the following page: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/...=942966&page=1

So you can open and look and even edit anything in patch3 but thats it, any changes you make dont work. Well that blows. I was reading in the thread for the PFM about something with files overrideing and moving them arround. I wonder if this would work.

Have you tried the rename-file idea posted on the Gamespot page as indicated above?

Strange. It sounded like those guys got it working that way. But maybe that was with earlier patches only. Things do change with CA's releases of patches.

Anyway, some other guys here at TWC used a different method to get it working. I just don't remember where I saw the matter discussed. You should search these forums for this place. The search words should obviously include the name of the DLC in question, anything which concerns how to edit that patch.

I found something about removing patch files 3 4 and 5. It was to improve start tiimes but I tried something, kind of a combination of that and the gamespot workarround. I renamed patch3 patch2 and made patch2 patch3. Hope was that if I could switch the file it openes first it would work but I ended up crashing the game. I want to figure out how to open each file on its own. It seems PFM auto opens the file that "ovverides the most" as I read ealswhere. DB editor sounds like what I need but I cant get that to work. I think if I could open the files more selectively I could figure something out.

OK, try the following instead. Use the DB Editor/Pack File Manager to open the patch with the American DLC units and create a mod from there, import the DB tables you want to edit to that mod, edit the values in question in that mod, and then activate that mod through the Mod Manager or the user.empire_script file. It's not a good idea to work on the CA patch itself anyway.

Hmm... Sounds Complicated. I like it ! I've never really created an independant mod before, just backupped my patch files and started editing, so this may take me an extra while

If you run into trouble about how to do it (with the DB Editor), there some help info here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=291282. Based on what you can learn there, you might have a mod up and running in no time

Another idea tried and failed. I removed the cells from patch3 for the units I want to edit and moved it to patch2 but it still didnt work. I wonder if there is something somewhere ealse that is preventing the editing of these particular units. Has anyone here made changes to these units and had it work?

I'm working on the mod idea still.

Well I've made several attempts to change through a mod but to no avail. Good news is I have screwed up the game... Yet. I'm reading through some different tutorials now to see if I can find another idea.

Success! The Mod worked to change the unit stats.
Now I'm working to tweak artillary projectile values. I adjusted the range and velocity of shrapnel and got super shrapnel, which as it turns out is just as deadly to my own units as it is the enemy (one shot explodes in front of the gun kill 3/4 of my artillary unit and a good portion of the infantry on both sides). Oops.

So you managed to edit the unit limits of the DLC patch (and more) after all? There you go - welcome to the modding community
