Been thinking the same but then again maybe the OP is talking about the installation path.

@scottish prince: if your problem is the installation path then all you need to do is to change
it to your RTW folder - wherever yours is located.

how old are you? 10-13? go to the folder where you have installed steam, (or search steamapp) and go there and rome total war folder should be there

Hmm... I think I'll copy and paste my installation guide for when another person wanted to know how to install on steam. If you don't understand this, then I probably can't help you.

You install the mod by directing the mod (assuming it's an installer) to C:/Programfiles/steam/steamapps/common/rome total war gold

Next, you open up your steam account (the actual program), right click the game you installed a mod to and select: properties --> click on set launch options.

Once you're on the set launch option's, you'll see this line where you can type onto. This is little more complicated and if you need help with a specific mod on what to do on this step, just tell me... I only have Lord of the Rings TW mod for alexander at the moment, but what I put for that was:
    -mod:alexander/lotrtw

For RTW gold, I'm pretty sure the "set launch options" line would be "-mod:rome total war gold/(mod name here)." Though I'm not certain.

^Once again, if you need help for the "set launch options step, just say so in a response to this thread.

It's much more complicated than the normal game, but it works. I'd save all the "set launch option" stuff on a notepad and store it somewhere safe. That way, if you have multiple mods, you can just copy/paste the "set launch options" lines. If you ever want to play the vanilla game, just delete everything on all the "set launch options"

Hope this helped. Also, tell me if you need assistance if you end up buying the actual game =)
Pretty much, you have to change the installation path to your steam game.
