    Default Love for the Carthaginians

Seeing as I could not find a love thread for this faction, I decided to create one for one of the greatest nations in Europa barbarorum. The Carthaginians have an awesome unit roster, with cheap and reliable liby/liby-phoenician/ Iberian line infantry as well as the awesome Liby-phoenician elite marines ( think the agranian assault troops minus the javelins but with heavy armor and with spears as well as axes) in the beginning. They also get nice light troops from the balearic islands, Numidia, and Iberia, as well as great liby-phoenician, Iberian ( super heavy lancearii cataprachts completely decimate everything in the western Mediterranean), and Numidian cavalry.

    Liby- Phoenician elite marines:

Later on, they get access to really good heavy line infantry ( reformed libyans and liby-phoenicians) and elite african legionaries and phalanxes, making them one of the most diverse factions in the game.

They also have a nice roleplaying feel to them. A colonial empire seeking to expand through military force, crafty alliances, and colonies in order to create as much wealth as possible. Which they also have in abundance after you conquer Iberia, North Africa, and Italy.

So, anyone else love the Carthaginians as much as I do ( and I really do love those Liby-Phoenician marines, especially now that I have silver chevrons on them )?

The main problem I have with the Carthaginian single-player campaign is that its too easy, lol. Profitable from the first turn and no threat to the homelands.

Which is why you have to make your own challenges

assault an island fortress with a small band of elite fighters.

fight wars spread out throughout the mediterranean.

fund nations that will soon be your enemies.

    etc.

Agreed. It takes quite a while for Ptolemies to start crossing the desert, perhaps if lucky some nasty rebel spawn will decide to attack some city.
Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they are in good company.

Yeah, Carthage suffers the most out of the AI's inability to make proper sea invasions. They're super easy to use, and they're super easy to beat, seeing how they usually can't reinforce their overseas territory, meaning that after beating them on the islands, you just attack them when you're completely ready.

Well, one good challenge to play against a good Carthage AI is to take control of them for a few turns and fortify their Iberian holdings. That way they are capable of having a continental force.

Carthage is one of my all-times great

But as mentioned before, the game can became quite easy if you don't make challenges for your self...

So what did i do? My own house-rules

    - Never did anything, that Carthage didn't try IRL
    - Always helped Rome get to Sicily
    - Always fought a war there with Rome, with limited men, while teleporting roman legions from the north to fight against me on the island
    - Once i've lost Sicily, always gave the Romans Corsica and Sardinia to simulate the end of the 1st. punic war
    - Helped Romans gain a foothold in Iberia, while i conquered up to the Ebro
    - Try to attack a strong Rome Hannibal style
    - Also, i always had a huge army, great for auto-resolve waiting near Lepki, to defeat any stacks from the Ptolemaioi. Unfortunatly that soon became the most important task in a campaing.

Carthages strength actually is not in the cheap line infantry of the Libys. You can get the same unit for the same price for any other faction (Greek Classical Hoplites). What sets them apart are the exceptional Iberian shock troops, Numidian Cavalry(these things are hell to face and are dirt cheap). However if you have played Multiplayer EB, My personal hatred for their unit roster ( only when fighting them ofc) comes not from their shock infantry nor their line infantry and not even the elephants, it is the Numidian Skirmisher. Yes you heard right, this unit is so good, so cheap , so fast, it can even act as some sort of ninja psedo-cavalry. However the main thing i like about them, is that they are excellent for defnding your rear from cavalry attacks ( yes kival, this is referring to my battles with you ) since they hold SPEARS by which they can even decimate heavy cavalry.

    Employ Archer-Spearmen.

The good news is they will only have knives in EB II. He he.
