The reason I keep on improving and feel driven to do so is because I tend to look at work done by those far superior in skill, hence I feel a need to improve myself in order to 'compete', if you will. This is probably the reason why I am my own worst critic.

Make the shadow slightly opaque and the atmosphere slightly thinner and going to the edge of thwere the shadow begins and it will look a world (geddit?) better. Also put a slight texture on the surface.

Shadow - Do you mean like making the edge there less faded?

Atmosphere thickness - I actually like it that way, but maybe it'll look better when thinner. We'll see.

Atmosphere going to where the shadow begins - Check.

Texture - I said it wasn't done yet!

I believe the latter is due to my slightly obsessive, if you will, attention to detail.

When I have made a good picture, I always see small areas to improve here and there, adding more and more complexity. In the end, as you pointed out with these icons, the picture may become slightly confusing.

Planning - planning - is the key to success. Unfortunately, I didn't really take that into consideration here.

Some areas reworked slightly, some layers moved, and new details and objects added.

Nevertheless, things are starting to come together, at least in the lower left corner.
