It was seemingly totally random. I started playing this again recently, and I've got no music. Americas does and so I'm pretty sure the other Kingdoms ones do too, but regular Medieval 2 (my favorite to play) has no music. Not on the menus, not in-game, none. I have the music on in settings. I even tried putting it at 100%. What's going on?
Any fixes PLEASE? I like this game and it really annoys me that this error happened.

The the sounds for vanilla are in the data\sounds folder of the main directory where u have installed medieval 2.
U should still have the disk for it. Go through them and u will find under sounds folder a couple of .dat and .idx files copy and replace them all and your sounds should be back for vanilla.

I tried copying the music files, deleting the originals, and replacing them with the copied ones, but I still don't have music :/
And no, there isn't an option to download the sounds or music alone, I'd have to delete the game and re-download it which would suck cuz it took quite a while to download and I think that would delete my save games.

You should be able to re-download them if necessary from Steam.

OK before u re download the entire game tell the file sizes of:-
    1-events.dat
    2-music.dat
    3-SFX.dat
    4-Voice1.dat
    5-Voice2.dat
    6-Voice3.dat

The last 5 files given above contain the sounds of m2tw and the first file gives the info to the game to play those sounds so make sure u have that also.
which are by default found under this path
    C:\Program Files\Medieval 2 Total War\data\sounds.
Did you fiddle with your sounds at all or not?
You need all these files along with .idx ones also, see the pic below

whoa, same is happening to me, after i tried to add my own music to a mod called Thera, i rename xxevents.dat, menu and gameplay sounds dissappeared, but music worked, lol, but later i renamed it events.dat again to have sounds, but it wont work anymore, i dont know why. i reinstalled the mod and sounds still wont work.

That's because you are doing it wrong. Delete all the .dat and .idx files in thera's sounds folder then make sure all the 39 sound text files are in the data folder of your thera folder, launch the game you will hear your new music as well as previous sounds etc.
