    Default Carthaginian Spartan General

After taking over some of Carthage's main cities, I send one of my armies west to the next town, I believe the name is Ippone. To my surprise the Carthaginian generals was a Spartan unit. Don't know how that happened but he is no longer. Spartan or not, nobody is a match for the Romani. In my current campaign is about 241BC and I just got the reforms(building the barracks) and my territories include all of Italy including( Sicily, Karali, Alalia, Massalia, Emporiom, Segestica, Dalminion, Ippone, Carthage and the cities closes to them(north-west and south). I have an camillian army going to Spain and another near Greece, along with another in north Africa. So far so good, once my barracks finish building I'm going to pump out 4-5 stacks and see if I can finish taking over Spain, Greece and maybe Gaul. But I would like to get the Marian reforms first before I head that way.

Xanthippos was a mercenary general from Sparta who helped the Carthaginians against the Romans.

Make sure you don't overstretch by conquering too fast. That's the biggest danger when playing the Romans.

If this was a Facebook you would receive dozens or even hundreds of mindless "Likes".

P.S. I always thought it was Xanthippus or something like that. Though Xanthippos sounds good, too. It's like Pontos, Pontus...

Well on Wikipedia, he is mentioned as Xanthippus, tough obviusly Ξάνθιππος is read with an -os at it's end

Its a pronunciation thing. Words ending in -os, look like they should be read with a long "o" in English. The "u" sound isn't quite right either, but it some people prefer the -us in English renderings of names because it avoids the long "o".

(Most people will read Pontos 'Pon-tose', when it should read closer to 'Pon-toss' - the "u" leads casual readers to a pronunciation closer to the "correct" version.

    -os = Greek

    -us = Latin

When the name is originally in Greek, I prefer the Greek ending. But it's the same really.

    Not AFAIK.

-us in latin should be almost like -ous in Greek (Attic Greek) if my memory serves me correct. The greek -os should be simmilar to the os in the word cross. But i dunno. I'm also not a native english speaker. it's interesting how it depends on modern languages how greek is read tough

Spelling is one thing, pronunciation another (at least in English, French, and so on). The spelling I have down regarding Greek and Latin. It's the pronunciation I was mentioning. Anyways, glad the OP has learned about Mr. Xanthippos/Xanthippus.
