    Default Bodyguard unit not replenishing?

I am playing Pahlava, and my FMs played a leading role in my conquests so far. They used to slowly regain their strength when sitting around, but now my current spearhead FM doesn't get back any of his losses. His unit is at 5 men and has been so for a few years. What causes this? Is it because he is outside his homeland? Or is the region missing a certain building or resource? I.e. what determines the ability to replenish your bodyguards?

does he got severe personal security penalty traits?
bad for him, conqueror means = Less bodyguards

Ahh, so every +-X to personal security in-/decreases the number of the bodyguard? That would explain it since he has 'Conquering Hero' as well as 'Ingenuous' and 'Careless of Security'...
Meaning a total of -9 from the 14 that most of my other family guys got...

A shame really since now I guess I will have to 'retire' him at the age of 28, as with 5 bodyguards he's worthless for combat and since he is a 'lives on the move' muppet he's worthless as governor too

A sad fate for the Conqueror of Babylon indeed...

Faction Leader and Faction Heirs tend to have more bodyguards than average generals perhaps since they are more important people for the faction. So i tend to use them more in battles and conqeuring lands. I don't know if having a great skilled leader affect traits of the others generals too, like in M2TW does i think with loyalty.

Once I can afford it and not lose the game, I keep my Family Members out of combat as a matter of principle anyway. Dying is for the peasants.

You obviously never played with Pahlava.

In the early game the FMs are pretty much the only unit that lets you survive de AS.

I agree - dying is indeed for the peasantry.

just let him sit on the back everytime he command the battles, looks like he had no more money to pay his own bodyguards (or as house rule, train a unit and kept it always on his side, even in battle, so that unit would act as his bodyguards - but got paid by the state)

I have to say upon reading this I laughed at all posts...it was entertaining. 2 things:

For the original concern. This is what I do in a situation like yours. Usually If I have a decent FM with few bodyguards & I need them in battle for a military or morale support roll...I will group them with other family members that are usually at half or more capacity as far as manpower. This way their numbers are bolstered for protection...and he's still able to allow all other units to leech off his abilities etc. If you do not have an extra family member to be grouped with him on the battlefield...you can use any other unit that will preform a similar military role that your depleted FM would take on normally. With this done...You don't waste any of your FM's good traits and you move him and his "extra" troops around as a group and have the preform as you normally would on the battlefield. Does this help any?

Now on to Mr. Fred and Limskj:
I totally feel you on battlefield work being for peasents. You'll catch my family members most of the time in a city....and only border province FM's moving out when there is a call for a campaign....just to smile and wave his little sword around. What can I say....it is good to be king...and his close family as well.

the size of the bodyguard unit is linked to the amount of influence the FM has...
