in the month of august mars is going to be its closest to the earth in recorded history and will be only 2nd to the moon as the brighest star. It will be large enough that with a simple 7x telescope mars will appear as large as the moon (if you were looking with your naked eye)....that is very close!

it will never happen again until 2287, so you better take some time during august and check it out.
