No Console Command on Windows 7?

Hi,

I just got a cool new computer and redownloaded RS2 Beta to start testing again, and I found out a couple of turns in that I can't seem to access the console command menu with the tilde ` key, which is vital for taking screenshots without fog of war.

Does anyone know if this is an issue with Windows 7, or 64 bit displays? And if so, is there any alternative console command key I can use to bring the console up, or some other fix? I tried to use console commands on both R:TW vanilla and Europa Barbarorum on this new computer and neither one allowed me to use it.

Edit: I also tried using the console command on RS2 Beta as well, forgot to mention.

I have Win7 64-bit and it works normally... Dunno, maybe it's something with your computer...

Can you change it in 'Options' to another key, perhaps?

Not that I can see, is there some other possible solution, or reason why this would be occurring that anyone would know?

I've got you covered! I struggled with this myself for a while (mainly to turn fog of war off, which I had forgotten to put into preferences), but I finally figured it out.
In short, I don't think it's an issue with Windows 7 per se (I had it on Vista), it's probably a keyboard language issue: RTW has trouble converting some language settings into settings that it understands, and so some symbols don't work. The tilde is one of these, apparently.

Here's what you do:
go to your RS2 beta folder, go to data, go to the text map, then open descr_shortcuts.txt

Search for the show_console line. You'll find the word "hidden" in that line. Delete it.

Then start up your RS2, go to control settings, then press "reset to default controls" in the lower right of the screen.

After that, the "Show Debug Console" command should show up in the list of keys you can adjust (because we've removed the "hidden", you see) and you can change it to whatever key does work!

That's exactly what I needed. I found that solution on an obscure post on these forums late last night, but I can set the console to anything but the default tilde key = /

Actually, there is another odd way to activate the command prompt...I had the same problem on my new Windows 7 64 Bit system...I actually had to de-active a hardware setting on my computer.

Really weird, as I did not see how it relates to the game at all. This is what I turned off...I found it on another thread for RTW vanilla..trying to find it.

If anyone knows why this worked, i'd loved to know...but it did.

It may be that that device, if your computer doesn't have an IR receiver (which most don't, because that's really, REALLY old tech), conflicts with a memory address RTW is trying to use.
I recall in my Tech days have other problems with that thing. Nobody needs it anymore, so it should always be disabled.
