Default A new God for the romans

Ok the title may have you wondering "what is he talking about"

Well what I'm referring to is, I'd like to add a new roman god to the roman faction, a god that i feel was very important during our time frame and ties in to a more personal aspect of religion for the Romans. We know that the Romans during our time believed in personal gods (household gods), and had certain deities who were especially tied in to worship at home, one such god is Janus (also known as lanus) the god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings and ends. (these last two are very important)

During the Pyrrhic wars Janus was depicted in coinage at the time known as the aes grave (worth an as) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aes_grave

Before the year's harvest is gathered, the Romans made offer mainly to Jupiter, Juno, and Janus.

the link will give a more detailed description of the ritual

here you have a list of prayers to Janus (credit is due;thnx to the diligent work of the NovaRoma organization)

to further illustrate his importance i give you this

Additionally his TEMPLE, where the what are dubbed The War Gates (a fitting temple for a god of a people almost constantly at war with someone)

"Those doors were referred to as the Gates of War, and they have quite a tradition throughout Roman history. The Gates of War are the double doors of the Temple of Janus on the street named Argiletum, on the Roman Forum road, through which the Roman legions passed on their way to war. "

i now leave it for you you to comment.

(ok also maybe i want this to go through bc my screen name is so similar

Janus certainly was an important god, but we only have a few slots for deities. The only one he could really replace is Saturnus.

What does everyone think? Saturnus or Janus for the Romans? That's the Temple of Government slot.

Saturnus is the equivelent of Greek Uranus right? the father overthrown by Zues/Jupiter?
I'd go with Janus or even Juno. Both deities were more widely worshiped than Saturnus i believe, i could be wrong.

Aren't there 8 temple slots in ExRM, of which some are only used for the Greeks?

I don't really mind to be honest.

I do however, think that Bellona may be more appropriate as the God of War for Rome though, before they adopted and renamed Aries.

@Rickas83, yes Juno and Janus were definitely more widely worshiped then Saturnus ever was

hmm I've rarely heard of her, but then again I'm sure for some of you the same goes for Janus, but nonetheless Janus at our time line Janus is widely worshiped and if we replaced Saturnus with him for the government slot, it be ok, in fact in my mind it'd symbolize how deeply religion was rooted in roman culture. (Romans couldn't go under a door without praying to Janus )

I dislike the Saturnus temple, its seem a bit illogical that the Romans would worship the one who Jupiter overthrew, even if he is the father of Jupiter. Seems a bit odd, don't you think? Additionally something that is particularly interesting about Janus..HE HAS NO COUNTERPART! unlike the other roman gods he seem to be entirely a ROMAN god, not Etruscan, Greek or whatever other type of god were later incorporated.

    Confused?

    Who/what uses up the temples??
The Greeks have 6, maybe 7, I think (though Epirus has +1 on that due to... Achilles? memory has taken a hit this weekend ).

There are 8 total temple slots, of which different sets are used by different factions. Rome is apparently using only 6, although the only one I can find that they aren't using is the horse god one. So we could theoretically add in Janus there, but clearly the horse god one isn't a good slot.

I agree that Juno would also be a good option, but there's definitely no spot for her. Same with Vesta. I'd like to include her most of all, actually.

I disagree about Bellona. AFAIK, she'd been largely supplanted by Aries by the time our game began.
