Well as far as Ii know the maximum you can have is for a unit of peasents and even that only reaches 250.But try TATW They have some preety large units.

So, the max unit per card ratio I can have is limited to 252 men? Is that because it is programed that way to reduce lag and stop the units from being too powerful/unwieldy?

Btw Rome, Medieval II and Empire + expansions are all good

I mean I wish to put many more units into the cards, eg 1000 (would be cool) but would not object to less than several hundred, or more than a couple thousand (the sky is the metaphorical limit)

you can make them even bigger, but can you run the game with so manny men on battlefield?
250+officers+general is maximum on huge unit scale, for how much one unit can have men
