    Default Greek city states discussion

    Hi,

Im an above average player, who knows which factions have the upper hand against others, etc.

I was wondering if anyone has a good army setup for the Greeks on Normal scale and 15K? I have an addiction for greeks atm.

    I do this:
    unit sword/shield
    6 Armoured hoplites G/G
    4 cretan archers
    2 archers G/S
3 Greek Cavalry G/G ( still not sure if I should get something else besides greek cavalry )
2 Spartan hoplites -/G ( I decided that the spartans don't need weapons upgrades )

    Another few quick questions:
Should I leave guard mode on or off for hoplites? With it off, they fight more aggressively, yet sometimes they pull out swords and spread out around the enemy.

Are militia cav and general's bodyguard worth it? I see little use of Greek cavalry, since they die easily to archer fire and other cavalry quite quickly. Maybe I should make more peltasts or hoplites G/G, instead?

Should I get cheverons for armoured hoplites? Is it cost effective? I find it neccesary when facing Carthage and Rome.

I just want a general build order. Maybe one against rome, as an excellent example.

    thanks

To tell you the truth, Greece is a very awful faction in the first place. Its lack of cav makes it extremely vulnerable to factions like Rome. Its best use is killing Egypt or brit because it has Rhodian slings for Chariot Archers and Cretans for the foot archer fight.

However, if you really want to use them, don't use Spartans much if not ever. They're not very cost effective and you can use the money on other units.

Militia cav have their uses, but never use Gen's bodyguard (can't really think of any circumstance that you'd use them in 15k or any other money...). To face a faction like Egypt, a common army would be 8 hoplites, 8 foot missile units, and the rest on cav. So yes, bring more infantry when facing these two factions.

Chevrons aren't really cost effective. Also, avoid using Greece against Rome. You have a huge disadvantage.

They are not necessery bad, but they are vurnable to factions they can't beat in a simple infantry showdown.

For 15k, its better to have 4 archers g/g. The base for an army should really be 6 g/g archers and then reduce for Cretans once you have reached 8 (under cwb rules which allow max 8 arch).

Cretans g/- is also a good idea.

Gold defense upgrades for spartans are over-expensive. Better to get more Greek Cav g/g.

Really though, 1v1 Greeks loses out against almost everything, an honourable exception being Egypt, sometimes. They either lose in inf vs inf, or cannot stop opposing cavalry long enough to prevent them from killing all your archers. Greeks are useful for team games though, since they have baeleric slingers against chariot archers, cretans for long range and generally archer killing power.

Team Greeks are taken for when you want a second best Sacred band style-phalanx, with archers instead of slingers and wasn't planning on taking heavy cav. I like to use Greeks teamed with Sele.

Mm if you really want a balanced army with greece it will be a bit weak due to the cav but i cant stop you so here you go:
    6 GG Armored hops
    6 GG archers
    6 GG greek cav
    2 spartans

your cav is so support them with the sparts and combine it with fire arrows on their cav. just remember that this aint a strong ranged army so you will have to attack. do not use this VS rome or carthage under any circumstances. i dont recommend greece as a standard balanced fac at all... should be used as a 3v3 center or an anti egy where its weak cav wont count and more money can be spent on ranged forces.
