Default Performance with huge unit settings

Hello first off I love this mod. This mod made me go back to RTW after playing ETW and NTW for months.

My question is how can I make this game run better. I can run NTW on full settings no problem with mods that increase unit sizes. When I play this mod with huge unit settings I seem to get a lot of slow down during battles of around 5000 men or so. Is the actual game engine the issue or is there some sort of setting I can change to get better performance.

Right now I have every RTW setting set to high with the max resolution.

My rig is a AMD quad core (forget the exact ghz)
    8 gigs of ram
    Windows 7 64 bit

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

maybe it's a problem with your processor since the RTW engine only utilizes 1 core, so if your ghz is low that could be your problem

Thanks for the reply and I was thinking it may have something to do with that. I wish there was a way to make application based on the single core architecture able to utilize your multi core.

Tesla has a right... but not sure why do you have a problem with 5000 men on battle map...
8Gb of RAM and videocard is ok... hmhm

Yeah I was wondering about that too... even if he has let's say 2.0 ~ 2.2 Ghz the Ram and videocard should be able to make up for that (at least 5000 men shouldn't have to be a problem)

As others said, with the rig you have its strange that you have any lag at all, as i run RS1 on max setting with 2008' parts worse than you.

    Things to consider:
    1) disable as many background programs as possible
    2) update your video card drivers
    3) set the afinity of your RTW.exe to one core, and of other major programs (explorer, svchost) to other cores
    4) check that windows does recognize ALL of your RAM

If none of the above worked then you have any of the following problems:
    1) a virus eating at your computer ressources > reinstall windows, its faster than using antiviruses
    2) a damaged ram on your video card
    3) computer wizardry against you

and my processors are definitely over 2 Ghz

Thanks for the help everyone. I probably did have other applications running in the background that might also be eating up system resources but I thought my 8 gigs would be able to handle it. I will try tonight making sure nothing else is runing in the background.

Gaming wise, having ram is limited by the optimal amount your OS will use + maximum amount the game will use. Having more than this does nothing to your performance.
There is no limit to the usefulness of Ghz, both on the processor and graphic card however ^^

Try setting unit detail to medium. The quality of the units is hardly any different, and the game uses sprites from afar. It massively increases performance with huge battles.

Don't use the highest settings for units. Use High as RTW renders all soldiers on Very High even if they are miles away from your camera position.
Also don't use the ingame AA (Anti-Aliasing) use ATI Catalyst or Nvidias thing (don't know the name) for that as they uses far less resources.

O and I hope you got a 64 bit OS, otherwise windows can only use 3 gig's of ram.
