Okay, I'm guessing here that you are changing the name in descr_sm_factions right? This is the internal name referenced by the game in all of the other files, if you change this name, it can't link the 'turks' entries in the other files to the new name, which causes the CTD.

So how can you fix this and change the names?

Well first of all put your descr_sm_factions back to how it was and check the game works. Then, go into the data/text folder and using one of these converters, convert the expanded.strings.bin and campaign_descriptions.strings.bin files to text files. Then go into the expanded.txt file and find the entries for the turks. This files determines the text that appears ingame that relates to this faction, such as Turk Faction Leader or Turk Citadel. Each entry will look like this:

{This_is_the_internal_name_of_the_entry}This is what you see in game

DO NOT change anything inside the brackets, only what comes after.

Change the entries to whatever you want, save and exit.

Then, do the same with the campaign_descriptions.txt file and save when done. This files controls the name and description of the faction as it appears in the start campaign screen.

Once you have made all of your changes, cut the original expanded.strings.bin and campaign_descriptions.strings.bin files out of the data/text folder and paste them into a folder on your desktop. DO NOT copy these files, you must cut as they have to be removed from this folder. The reason for cutting not deleting is so that you have a backup. The reason for removing them from the data/text folder is that the game reads the strings.bin files not the txt files, but if there are txt files present and not string.bin files, the game will automatically create new strings.bin files from the txt files and read the data from these.

Start the game and you should see your change have been implemented.

Any problems, just post here again.

Changing anything outside the brackets in the files inside the text folder is save. You can rename settlements, names, units, faction, what you like. The only trouble I so far encountered was when leaving an entry blank; in this case giving nothing as visible text for a dead FL caused a CTD on mouseover in the familytree.
