Hints for playing the French?
I've really enjoyed the Peninsula Campaign as both the British and Spanish. Played on H/H and found it a lot of fun, yet the ebb and flow of the war proved a challenge. Now as the French, oh my. It reminds me of playing the western Romans in Barbarian Invasion.
3 turns in and I will be bankrupt next turn and there is nothing I can do about it save dismantling my armies.
I tried to moved Soult to the west, to engage and destroy Beresford, and then loot the Portuguese region to the west. He suceeded with some heavy losses, but is now cut off by Wellington, who come out to the SE vs moving north where I had Massena waiting.
I moved another French general who has captured Valencia, but now cannot save the region west of it that is being besieged by one of the rebel armys. The other I destroyed by engaging with my last general who starts NE of Madrid.
Any ideas how to start up better? I am inclined to forget about Valencia for the time being and use 2 of my starting armies destroying both of the northern rebel forces, and moving Massena back around Madrid and Soult to try and hold and Cordoba/Granada.
