    Default A few concerns.

Hello to all. After much research, and contemplation I have decided that tomorrow I will download RS 1.6. At first I had planned on waiting for RS 2 to be released, but since we have no precise timeline on when that will be I think I should go ahead and play what I can now. I have tried to do as much research on the forums as I can, and I must say everyone on here has been so gracious and willing to share their knowledge. I still have a few questions though before I start my Roman Campaign tomorrow.

    1) Is it possible to play on after I have met the victory conditions. And further more is there a max number of turns on the game that I can not exceed. That was one thing that kinda upset me about EB.

    2) I have played RTW: Vanilla, BI, as well as EB. One of my favorite things to do is historically expand the Roman Empire to its accurate limits set in the mods time period (the victory conditions). Beyond that I will go on to seize the Britian, Dacia and Mesopotamia (sp?), and then defend the Empire from the unwashed barbarian hordes. My concern is that after I take my Roman territories in the east that there will not be enough valuable land left on the RS campaign map for any faction to challenge my Imperialist tendencies.

    3) Has anyone modded the turns per year to 4 the way it is in EB. I really liked that because I felt it prolonged and slowed that game, as well as allowed me to role play my FMs more.

Those are my remaining concerns/questions. I believe im going to play on 1 turn recruitment because I dont particularly like the idea of fighting of 10 stacks every turn. I also like the strategy and economic challenges it presents. I will try to post my progress on the forums as tighten my grip on the worlds tribes. Again, thank you for helping out a noob.

Hello, first, good choice in downloading RS1.6, it's worth it even if RS2 is released the day after tommorow.

First, no, in RS1.6, the turns are still 2 per year. I know, it's one of the good things EB has, and I wish RS had it too- family members last twice as long! I don't know about RS2 though, they may have put 4 turn years in there.

Once you seize the lands the roman empire historically had, there will still be opponents for you- the Germans, Samaritans and Dacians all expand into northers and eastern europe, and by then one will probably have beaten the others and will be a decent foe. Also in the east the parthians tend to cause a hell of an annoyance, what with their HORSE ARCHERS (grrrrr....) It depends really on who ends up owning most of the land in the east- you could be facing the Seluicids, the Armenians, or the Parthians.

There is a max number of turns- that is something that cannot be changed- the game cannot go on forever! However, I think it ends around 120 AD, by our yearing system, so you have about 400 years- or 800 turns, to play. The game map is much more detailed- by which I mean, there are more cities and provinces in a smaller area. The map is more 'zoomed in' than E.B.s, if you like. This means it will take you longer to conquer an area, say, Greece, than you normally would.

One more thing- when RS2 is finally released, you will get a proper challenge as Romans- the team have scripted a 'Roman Rebellion', where some of your legions rebel and you can loose a big chunk of your empire. So look forward to that... when it finally comes.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and answer my questions. You really shed some light on the things I asked. I actually waited to download this mod so I could get a new computer so I clould juice up the graphics and put everything on max setting. RSII sounds amazing. Especially the rebellion, which must be what those "Rebel Praetorians" (sp?) must have been all about in the preview. Do you have any basic house rules you would recommend for this mod?

Hehehe- there is a 'building' in all settlements called house rules!

RS works best if you let the computers build up a bit- what I tend to do is quickly conquer the area I want to be my main base (for example, Greece, if I was Macedonia). Then I build up my cities and make lotsa money! If you spend about 10-20 years doing this, the computers will have done it too, and then they really start conquering. It becomes a kind of knock-out tournament- eventually there will be around 6 powerful factions left.

Other house rules... You can recruit generals in RS- they aren't family members, and don't appear on your family tree (so they cannot become leaders or heirs) but for all intents and purposes, they are very similar. You should have a general or governer in each city- it's more realistic.

Play on Hard/Very hard. (That's campaign hard, battles very hard.) I dont know why, but for some reason hard is harder than very hard in RS.

1 more- the Roman legions. For realism, you shouldn't recruit more than 10 of each legion, and they should travel together with a general or family member- this was how the legions worked historically.

I'm sure there's more- when you start your game, go to any city and look for a building called 'house rules'. It'll tell you what's what.

Again thank you so much. Im in the process of trying to download everything to my computer, but when i try to install RTW it keeps saying Direct X is not found. Strange seeing as how when i download the three RTW discs it shows where it is installing it. Ill cruise the forums and see if anyone has had this problem. Thank you so much bro.

If you're downloading the game for free off the internet, you won't be able to patch it. I don't know why, but it's just an issue. RS needs the latest patch to work- so you won't be able to play it.

My bad I did not really communicate that well. I was trying to Install The Vanilla version so I could download the mod. After the install was complete and i tried to run the vanilla version it still said i didnt have direct x. I just had a pretty awesome computer built (atleast to me ) so I guess something is not compatable. You would not happen to have any ideas would you. I assume if i cant even play the vanilla version, downloading the mod is kinda pointless cause i wont be able to play that either.

If you have installed it from a disk, then you should try and download directx 9.0c off the internet. Maybe, as your computer is brand new (lucky you ), it does not have it installed.

Here is a download link: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/directx.html

Why not just download it from the Microsoft site and not have to deal with third party software which has the possibility of being infected, corrupted, or just plain out of date?

That's a download that lets older programs run on Windows 7. I haven't actually tried it- I have the dreaded Vista and RTW works fine for me. Hopefully it should work.

EDIT: Oh, I see the shop are going to fix it. Well, good luck with that- if it doesn't work you can try the link above.

I am playing RS on Windows 7.

Since the first download on this computer (also new ) I have not had any problems. And it is 64 bit.

Watch out for "sharks" before you swim...

PS You won't regret playing 1.6, the terrain, for one, is awesome!!
