NTW...vs...ETW

Its your decision. Comment your thoughts on which is better, and which you prefer.

I prefer NTW. The reasons are the more detailed maps. I like the new battle effects NTW brings. I also like the time frame better then ETW. The 2 week turns are great too.

I enjoyed ETW for a very long time. The one thing I miss about it is the larger map.

I have never played NTW but it can't be worst.

NTW has no grand campaign (a real one) by my definition - ETW wins by default... with mods... quite a few of them. That's not to say it isn't noticably superior to ETW in many ways, merely that the presence of a grand campaign that can justifiably be called one in ETW outweighs it.

I've just recently invested some time into Napoleon: Total War and I can say if Empire: Total War released with the polish of N: TW, Empire's would be of much more positive critical acclaim. Unit response time is better, naval battles are more enjoyable and its just a better game over all. But as was mentioned before, many are a fan of the massive geopolitical scale of Empires, which I too am a fan of. I do wish it would focus on the Napoleonic age as a whole, but it's still a solid game. Unfortunately it took an entirely new game for them to get everything right that they got wrong in the first one.

Conquering Europe isn't grand enough?

I've returned to NTW from the excellent Darthmod (ETW) just to see what it's like. Very pretty but unhistorical and arcade battles compared to the ETW mods or the NTW ones I played . I'll finish a campaign and look for a decent mod after that.

NTW's campaign is much better than ETW's. ETW was bigger, but had less regions, less detail.

NTW is the most Historically accurate TW to date.
NTW has better AI
NTW has the best MP
NTW has more variety amoung units
NTW has no clone armies, or clone uniforms.
NTW has better modding oppertunities than ETW
NTW is more advanced graphically
NTW has a GOOD expansion. Warpath compared to the Peninsula Campaign sucks.
NTW has a much bigger variety of gameplay.

Is that enough, I can go on.

Realistically, Empire has much better opportunities - the map is much more comprehensive than Napoleon's.
And graphically - many of NTW's features have been retrofitted.
Vanilla NTW is better than Vanilla ETW - but modded ETW is just as good, if not better.

You may be right if you only compare the vanilla versions or MP. I don't play either but prefer the mods (NTW ,ETW,MTW2 ,RTW) and in that respect ETW has much more replay value. The only vanilla TW I've played in years is the new Peninsula campaign and that doesn't compare with the excellent mods I've played.
As for clone armies in ETW, well the modders have produced masses of different units for each faction.

Well that comparison is pretty much what the thread is asking about. I actually don't have a problem with either and wouldn't pick one over the other as they both have their ups and downs. I like Empire for it's sheer GRAND SCALE of some hundred odd years and conquering the world and its technology. But I love Napoleon at the same time for the detail of the actual situation, shorter term consequences, not to mention the extra factors they add in to make seasons a big thing(attrition, something just not needed at the higher scale of 6 months per turn, it's legitly assumed that losses are replaced).

I have ETW and am dabating if I should get Napoleon. From what I hear from you guys It's a vast improvement in terms of gameplay but at the price of smaller campain maps. For now I'll stick with Empire, but if I got some extra cash and time I might give it a shot.

Well if I had to buy one I would defently go for NTW, its cheaper and vastly better that ETW in every aspect in my opinion!

I would disagree with you in general, i believe that Empire:Total war is a better game, simply for all round gameplay, and by the fact that, most things on it are far for enjoyable than Napoleon:Total war

When I put all the facts you mentioned in comparison...none of them really matter. The only thing that matters to me is that ETW ran very unstable. And it is the only game for years that ran that unstable. In every single battle I had to fear a CTD. It was annoying to say the least.

NTW in contrary runs very very stable. I had one CTD in hours and hours of gameplay.

So even though I miss the american theatre of war, the american 24 pounder frigates and the HMS Victory I don't have a choice. I simply cannot play a game that CTDs once every hour.

I didnt seem to get CTD's every hour, it ran fine for me.

That's right, no. The graphics in NTW are still superior, no mod to date has changed that. Though graphics is not everything I admit...

I haven't any CTD since patch 1.5. Are you sure about it GODzilla?
