This for me has been the most important fix in the patch and its really made a difference to cavalry attacks and balanced the game in the right way.

CA actually fixed something? I am shocked. i wish they fixed some things on RTW... Sometimes hoplites still stray from their phalanx formation as if theyre being pushed magically, and you can wipe out entire armies with Wedge formation glitch...

The infantry "square" function in Napoleon Total War is still far from perfect (my lancers have been in contact with several line infantry units who have still be able to form squares), but MUCH improved! The secret I think is that cavalry must be relatively heavily engaged with an infantry unit in order to prevent it from forming a square, as opposed to merely being in contact with it.

Ah - ive only played one battle and that was against the AI so far and i couldnt form square when my infantry was just in contact by the attacking cavalry unit but i will have to play some MP to check it out properly.

I've used heavy cav for the first time, they seemed pretty effective.

Yeah it has changed the game up a bit IMO. It doesn't revolve purely around lancers now. A balanced selection of cavalry is effective. Lancers+Mounted Infantry for anti-cav, Heavy Cavalry for anti-infantry. Because of the square changes, you can take advantage of your opponent's micro errors. A heavy cav to the back can rout a line fairly quickly.

the problem is a lancer charge to the back of a line will rout it as well, and there only 2/3 of the price, anouther problem i am finding with heavy cav(and i really want them to work)is that you charge a line the opponent see's the threat and squares up,the heavy cav will lose more guys pulling out because there just so slow, while lancers can just dart back with a couple of loses. In cav fights they also seem to smash other cav with a bit of good micro.

At the end of the day its just wrong that a unit that you can buy for as little as $550 can wipe out a whole unit of line in one swipe.

Read about the Battle of albuera - a unit of polish vistula lancers almost wiped out Colbornes line inf. Brigade with a flank attack.

Overpowered? dont be ridiculous! just beacuse people have to fear cavalry now instead of not caring because they could form square whenever they want and obliterate any cavalry unit at will. Time to move on from the Empire days my friend!

You lose your cav, you're having a hard time recovering. It is overpowered.

excuse me but i come from a place that has cataphracts with AP maces who can charge into a fully upgraded phalanx and win. compared to that your problem is not so bad.

Then again we have chariots to deal with em...

But does the cost of those units leave the player lacking in other area's?at the moment lancers and gun cav are so cheap you can spam a ton of them and keep a strong line with a small skirmish force.

Cav are over powered when I start taking 15 units of cav like I do to light inf. As of right now I havn't bought more then 11 units of cav at one time.

i dont mind cav been powerful but there cost should reflect that power,i just find it a bit ridicules a unit that costs a bit more than militia can wipe out expensive line so easy.
