    Default Installing and Windows 7

Hi guys, I did a quick search for this but what I saw didn't really address the problem I have. I'm not sure if it's a problem or my impatience.

I've tried to install R:TW twice on Windows 7. I have Professional 64bit version. It installs fine up to a point. About 4 'bars' along the installation (it says it's doing the Battle of Asculum or something to that effect) it apparently stops. I've left it for three quarters of an hour or longer and it doesn't budge. No message comes up saying it needs disc 2 either.

Am I being impatient or is there a problem here?

Thanks guys, sorry if this has come up before

Ok I tried that. I clicked on "activate a product through steam" (or something to that effect) and I tried the code in a number of ways, all described as invalid. Any ideas?

    Thanks for your reply!

hummm.... is the cd new? if so you can try to return it. I've had no problem to play rtw in win 7, I have a 64bit ultimate.

if it is not new.... your at a loss... you have the purchase, the valid key but not the cd for it to work.

I've had the game for years. It installed on vista but wouldn't run, but I put that down to vista. Now it doesn't even install. It ran on xp fine, so the key is valid, steam just doesn't acknowledge it. Would that be down to age? Could I find another key online that word work? Cheers.

Why are you trying to run RTW through Steam? The only advantage is that once it's installed you don't need the disk in anymore.

Have you attempted to clean the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM? What does the surface of the disk look like? I know that irishron mentions toothpaste every now and then for this......

There are ways to repair damaged disks but int the end you could be installing a bad copy of the game.

You can buy Rome Total War Gold Edition (it's RTW and RTW BI) on Steam for £4.99 and RTW Alexander for £9.99(?). If you don;t want to buy another copy then I'd suggest that you source it from Steam.

I am fairly sure that Steam will never download the content if it wasn't purchased through Steam the first place........

It was an idea suggested further up the thread.

Isn't that what you just advised against? If not how do I do this? Bear in mind I have already tried and failed to 'activate a product through steam'.

Steam didn't think the activation key was valid. I guess that that's because I didn't buy it through steam after reading what you guys have said.

I've given the cd a wipe, so I'm going to have another try later today. Right now I'm installing Medieval 2: Total War and the Kingdoms expansion with no issues whatsoever. I'd rather not have to buy a new game if I can avoid it.

    Thanks again guys
