Icon5 Okay, um....where is this again???

Where on Earth is the preferences file located at in this mod? I can't seem to find it anywhere! I'd like to turn off the fog of war; for whatever reason, the tilde button which brings down the in game console does not work for me, so toggling FOW in game, or any other kind of cheats whatsoever is impossible.

Side question: has anyone here ever had that problem? Not being able to bring down the console which I used exclusively for the toggling of the FOW (no cheats for me...boo ) is very annoying.

That's where you go, what is the government thinking? I mean wha, what do Congressmans' children eat -- MITES?!? All 400 dollars does is remind me how screwed I am; You'd be better off if you're Congressman just came to your door, and pissed on your foot."

You can turn off the fog of war in game. If you hit the '~' key in campaign map and type in 'toggle_fow' it will turn it on and off each time you type it. It saves also so there's no need to edit it in preferences. I'm on my laptop which doesn't have RS on it so I can't tell you where the preferences file is.

LOL Velico, the ~ button you are referring to has a name: the tilde.

As I just said, that for reasons that I cannot ascertain, does not work for me in-game. VERY annoying as you can imagine.

Sorry I guess I didn't read your post with full attention. But no, I've never had that problem. Keep your save files and reinstall?

    nope, doesn't work.

I wonder if I need to find the driver for my keyboard. You wouldn't think that would be the problem but perhaps it is. I just have the gateway keyboard that came with my computer. I've even tried this on my wireless logitech keyboard, and alas, it doesn't work.

This seems like such a random problem and I don't have a clue where to begin.

You can reassign the console command key. See post 5 here, it worked for me. It seems laptops don't get on with tilde.

If you're on vista or windows 7, RTW is installed into two separate folders, each containing bits and pieces.

btw - the preferences file should still be there where it always has been.

Only thing you need to do is to change something in the settings to create the preferences file
if it is not there yet.

Go into options and change any grafik setting to do so.

If you are using Vista or 7 and have installed to 'c:\program files (x86)' then look in the 'virtual store / application data' area. Make sure that you've set your folder options to 'show hidden files and folders'. The other thing to remember is that the preferences.txt file is not created until the game is launched for the first time (I usually change something in the options menu).

You can run %appdata% in the run dialog box to get the start of the application data folder tree and then follow it down through steps to the RTW folder.

Well, thanks for all the help people.

Unfortunately, the reassignment of the key thing didn't work. For some reason all the files are classified as "Read-Only" and that cannot be changed (even though I went to options and changed it...right clicking on it immediately afterwards showed it was still read only). When I simply copied the contents of the file and created a new file with the same name that I then dragged to the folder to replace it, it had no effect. I removed the 'hidden' from the in_game console and it still didn't show up in the options in-game.

Marcus Tullius, thanks! Seems weird that they've arbitrarily moved some files into weird folders like that. Any idea why windows 7 has done that? Oh, and I don't suppose you know what the whole x86 thing is about do you?

Obviously your are having Windows 7 - you must change the permission setting to make file changes (it is tedious and not easy, I know, I had the same problems).
Go to properties/security and make the permission changes.
Note: Folder will not change the notification "Read-only", only files will, but they are all ready to be changed.

Why does your console come down when you press the tilde key? Mine is the key below the esc key to get the console down, as in this key `.

The key is different on other languages. In Finnish keyboard its the "ö" wich opens console.

On my copy the console is default to the `¬¦ key, but on most games '@ is default for me.

Indeed - it seems in the UK, at least, the key below the Escape key (as in the "`¬¦ key" described above) is the way to open the console.

    You, can by-pass that problem...
    Go into Device Manager
    Expand "Human Interface Devices"
    Uninstall "Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver"
That should get you Tilde key to work...
Don't worry, the device installs again when you insert something into your USB port...

    SPQR:

How would that get the tilde key to work? Do you know why? And how else will that effect my keyboard?

And to all you UK guys out there: American English keyboards don't even HAVE that key what the heck is that???

I can verify this is a possible solution because I have to do it myself. Unfortunately the driver reinstalls itself all the time, so you have to check each time you start Rome.
