Yes they all have bodyguards and some have special abilities:
Aragorn: Flower of Chivalry
Denethor: Heart of the Lion
Elrond: Power of the Eldar (don't know the original name)
Witch-King: I don't know for sure but it makes enemy units rout easier

There might be more but these are all I can think of right now.

Celeborn has some "Light of xy". Same effect as Elrond's ability.

Or gays? For i don`t know whether you can make unique portraits for wives, and i`m sure that you can`t make their names unique.

Also, you`d have to change many, many, traits and ancillaries (or even duplicate them!) for they refer to men.

In "A Song of Ice and Fire" Renly is gay and Oberyn is possibly a bisexual.

custom portraits for princesses is possibles. in ME lore arwen has ger own

Ah, well, yes but i don`t think that princesses will ever be added to the main mod.

what do all the hero special abilities do?

IIRC

Aragorn (e.g Flower of Chivalry): Gives more stamina and attack.

Denethor (Heart of the lion): Rallies troops.

Elrond: Makes units unable to rout, makes them fight better as well.

Witchking: Drastically lowers the morale of the foe.

There are more heroes, but i don`t know which ones actually have such abilities. In my version the nazgul all have a weaker version of the witchking ability for example, but i`m using RC/RR.

The Nazgul thing is in vanilla too.

Legolas, Gimli, Uglú and Grishnakh are in with unique models but I don't think they have special abilities.

Gandalf has something very much like Elrond.
