    Default Advices on Macedonian Campaign

    I installed XGM yesterday and I started a Macedonian Campaign in M/M. Having read the readme I focused on building ports, markets paved roads and I send my diplomat to make agreements with Thrace, Seleucids and Greek Cities in economic field. But it didn't work and the next turn I had -1100 denari. The next turn Greek Cities besieged Corinth. So I took 2 Levy Phalangites from the army that my faction heir commanded and 1 Politikoi and 1 Thyreophoroi I besieged Athens. I can't use more of this army because a full stack of Gallic troops (1700 men) are just in front of my army. The spy I sent in the Gallic town above Pella reckoned another full stack of Gallic troops. So what must I do; Even if I fight and win the first stack of Gauls probably I can't use it to conqer the rest of Greece because the other stack of Gauls will besiege Pella. And what must I do to solve this economic crisis;

    You need to eliminate the threat from the Gauls as quickly as you can, which will probably mean destroying two of their stacks (there is a third but it usually attacks thrace). Then turn your attentions to Greece. If you manage to survive the Gauls and subdue the Greeks then your economic problems will be solved.

    Thanks for your answer. I suppose that I must sent my army next to Pella so I can get reinforcements in the battle. If I build a fort in the mountain pass do you think this will prevent Gauls to attack;

    I played the next 2 turns and things gone thankfully different. I retreated my army next to Pella expecting the gauls to come and fight me there. Instead they retreated and sent 580 men to besiege Amfipolis. I sent my army to fight them and I won. The Greeks attacked the army thad besieged Athens. I lost the fight due to enemy's superiority in numbers and quality of troops. So I sent my big army to besiege Sparta. In the next turn My army invaded Sparta which had no walls and it was defended only by the faction leader and a Spartan royal Guard. Right after the victory I besieged Patras which I qonquered the next turn. So the Greeks had only Athens and finally my economy went well. I made ceasefire with the Greeks but knowing that they probably attack me the next turn I had produced some units in Sparta and Corinth. I had peace with them
    for 1 turn more and then they besieged Corinth and Thebes. So I gathered some troops and I send them to support Corinth.

    Nice, try my advice, always sucess in VH level, put all your phalanx unit from yr big army to pella and move the rest south to take athen, place the phalanx to block the city citadel from the barbarian and yr general should be somewhere far away from the enemy in order to stab behind their back when phalanx hold them back

    Anymore I begin by ignoring the Gaul. I send my army south and try to conquer all of Greece as quickly as possible. Usually I can do this just after losing Pella. But with Greece conquered I can quickly retrain my army and march it north without worrying about my back.

    I normally move the starting army into the northern passes in the first turn, which forces the two Gallic armies to attack it - with the steep terrain in your favour, it's usually not hard to annihilate both armies with minimal losses. By turn two, your army is free to head south and smash Greece.

    Thanks for your answers. I took Athens and Kydonia destroying the Greek City States. While I was qonquering Greece, Gauls used their armies to destroy Thrace and with the rest they tried to capture Pella unsuccesfully. So I gathered some troops and I captured Sardica. So my next target was Syracuses which was a rebel settlement and I trained some troops(Phalangites, Slingers and Politikoi if I remember right). But Independent Greek Cities besieged Larissa and Pella so I send this army to capture Thermon. Next target was Ambracia. Then I fought the army that besieged Larissa and I destroyed them. In battles I use my Phalangites to engage the majority of the enemy infantry while my hoplites and thorakitai(or Doryphoroi) hit them from the sides. I use my cavalry to hit them from the back and to fight the archers.
