    Default [EU3] How to colonize?

I the almost last tutorial you need to play as Portugal and colonize,
so the first mission was easy, I colonized the islands just by clicking and the add buttom,
but the next mission is to colonize 3 other regions, which I cant because they are too far away from core or somthing like that...
So how do I colonize those far away regions?

If it is just because of the distance from your nearest province with a core of your nation, you can do two things: Invest in naval research and the right advisors to increase your colonization range, or wait for gaining a core on your newly acquired colony once it has become a "full" province (colonies turn to full provinces once they reach a population of 1000). Waiting for cores takes several decades, though.

Send colonists to the Azores till it reches 1000, then send colonists to Cuba

You have to wait for the colony to become a core province first, though, as of In Nomine and Heir to the Throne. And that takes around half a century, so it's usually a better idea to invest in tech and advisors.

I honestly don't know, but I do speculate on the following:
    a) You will be unable to send any additional colonists to the cut-off province.
    b) The colony will continuously lose population for as long as it is outside of your colonial range. That would be because you always have to pay upkeep for colonies that have not yet become self-sufficient (population of 1000), and with the colony being out of range, you cannot offer any real support to it.

That said, even the Paradox-Wiki does not mention the results of a cut-off colony. Even so, it's worth a look for the topic (as well as any other topic about Paradox games that may come up).

Either wait for your naval tech to increase, wait longer for you to core on more distant provinces or the sensible move - employ an advisor, or three, that give you a bonus to colonial range.

In all likelihood the AI will seize the colony. This immediately makes it a part of their territory, rather than simply being occupied by them. They could also completely destroy it.

However, if they seize it you should be able to take it back.

Thank you, so is it good to kill all the natives?

Honestly, if you're playing the Tutorial, don't. They're awful. In IN, the way colonies work was reformed slightly, so i'll go on the basis you own this and bought the Complete edition.

Which provinces you can send colonists to is determined by your colonial range. This increases steadily with Naval technology. If a province is within your colonial range of ANY cores owned by you, it's within distance to colonise. If this province is coastal, you can send colonists at will. If it's inland, you must have land connecting cities (not colonies, so these must have >1000 population), to be able to colonise it. Also, i'm pretty sure your capital must also be coastal, or have a land connection to a coastal province in order to send any colonists overseas.

You can increase your colonial range with advisors or the idea QFTNW (quest for the new world), the latter you should have anyway if you want to do some serious colonising. Once you've sent a colonist, he then has to be successful. If he fails, he's wasted, if not, he adds 100 population (or whatever you set it to) to the colony. You then have to pay colonial upkeep, something you can alter with a slider on the treasury page. Paying the maximum gives +50 growth/year. Paying the minimum gives -50 growth/year. There's also other factors governing how fast your colony grows. Natives decrease growth depending on their aggression (killing them obviously wipes out this penalty). There's another penalty for the province being isolated (i.e. no neighbours). There's other things that affect growth such as advisors, decisions and events. Also, being of the Reformed faith increases growth. You can continue to send colonists at a much higher success chance while the colony is growing. Once it reaches 1000 population, it becomes self-sufficient, and is a city for all intents and purposes. It then reverts to normal city population growth and you no longer have to pay upkeep.

No. Once your colony reaches 1,000 settlers all the natives are added to the city's population. This can be a massive boost. But you may need to leave troops guarding the colony in the meantime, which can be difficult. Generally if the aggressiveness is under 5 I just hope they don't attack.

It really depends how aggressive they are.

Firstly, the numbers arn't really that relevant until a battle happens, and even immensly few amounts of European soldiers comfortably beat natives. Aggression determines their likeliness to attack, but it also gives a penalty to growth. Ferocity determines how hard they'll fight, and truthfully i've never quite understood it. It might determine how many the natives kill if they're successful in an attack, i'm not quite sure.

If the aggressiveness is only 2-4, the colony at full maintanence might get to city level on it's own steam. If it's at say 7+, you've almost got no hope of getting there without native attack, and the penalty is large enough that you pretty much have to kill them. Honestly, it's not too big a deal saving the natives as population won't affect your production values (at least not much, if at all), which are the main source of income. Keep in mind that if a native attacks and you have no army defending there, you will lose a few hundred population. Putting a 1k stack there is probably nescessary if you're really relying on it. There are a few provinces though that have really sizeable native populations (Bahamas has 5k low aggression natives iirc, a great amount), and may be worth striving for.
