Here's a list of other things needed which will help in fleshing it out:

Surnames and given names of Japanese clans during our era. If lacking we can use modern ones.
Quotes from contemporary Japanese poets etc.
Contemporary or preceding paintings and art.
As an extension of the surnames, a list of the major clans in Japan at the time who operated under one of the three major powers.
Information about what role the Emperor and the Imperial Court played during the conflict, if any, and how they should be represented if at all.

In addition to that, basically anything that can present itself as a building(including guilds), trait, ancillary, or historic event is of utility.

Also watch the video, yes its silly but there is about 30 seconds that is historically accurate (from01.50) and gives you a nice intro to the three factions at the start of our era.

This would be an extremely useful book to acquire, describes in detail the type of warfare fought during our era in the chapter "Science of War"- essentially a complicated form of horse archery with supporting foot soldiers having little overall impact other than to "harrass and distract the bushi on horseback".

Really interesting, unglamourous stuff.

Just a note here, I have the folder with the map up and working. Did experience one CTD when playing around 15 turns in, not sure what's causing it but it's stable enough for now. Still need to add Fujiwara faction and add in the regions. Also probably will want to remake the EDU/BMDB once we have the first of our new units ready.
