Icon4 help me change to linux

hopefully my thread title caught someone's eye, thnx in advance

Ok so heres my situation, I am a Win XP user, i want to change to Linux, i went looking up some distros, found quite a couple of really cool looking ones, but eventually i settled for Linux Mint (hopefully someones here has it)

Now i went on the linux.org site and did some reading, began to read this http://www.linux.org/info/wanttouse.html and the words "it's important to get the right version of Linux paired up with the right computer". That got me thinking"can my crappy machine" run linux well?"
(without a load of lag, or constant freezing)

    Here's what i know (thnx to CPU-Z)

    CPU: Intel Celeron 325 (codenamerescott)
    2.53GHz
    254MB of RAM

(not exactly sure if this is relevant)

    chipset: i865P/PE/G/i848P
    southbridge: 82801(ICH5)

(if i'm missing any relevant info, plz tell me)

anyways as it stands, does anyone here know if I can inf act use Linux Mint without encountering a lot of lag or constant freezing, or any other probs.

256 MB of RAM is below the recommended minimum specs for most mainstream Linux distros, including Linux Mint. Programs these days just require more than that, regardless of OS. You might want to try a lighter-weight distro like Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Even then, it'd be best to just get some more RAM if you can; that's your real bottleneck.

I see, ok then guess i"ll go shopping for some some sticks of RAM, maybe upgrade my rig ( I was thinking of building a new one but upgrading my current is cheaper)

You might want to try a lightweight distro like DSL or DSL-N as with most Linux disro's they can be run of disc or a USB drive but since there so small there ideal and you don't have to worry about formatting your hard drive or creating new partitions.

BTW Sim, great work on getting the server back up, we owe you. I know from my previous employers just how much work is involved when you have to rebuild a server from scratch and your pissing around recovery discs, phones, messenger trying to get remote access to work etc it's just no fun at all. So thank you for all your efforts it's really appreciated.
