    Default Ubuntu 10.4 probs

It indeed is better than the 9.xx version, so I gave it a try.

So far so good, it didn't melt my GPU, which in my books is always good, almost everything installed right from the start.

    Now the problems.

    1) I have no sound from my speakers, the 9mm jack works fine. Tried to download some realtek drivers to no avail, noob can't get those installed. And I'm not sure if my subwoofer will work.

    2) I have a great battery life of 1 min... Yes my pc has a crappy battery it is indeed with almost half the capacity lost, but that don't mean anything in win 7 I get up to 1:30h of it.

I really hope someone can help me

    And here comes the Dxdiag

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Hi Mr MM. This may work for sound. Go into control panel open sound and set your speakers at default. Okay you should see a strip of blue lines appear next to the speaker symbol. Anyway next open windows media player and shove in a music CD with luck this will trigger your speakers. You may have to try this a couple of times, I was without sound for 2 days until I tried this out windows7 64 bit can be tricky.. Hope it works, mags

    1) I haven't had sound playback problems for a long time, thankfully, but I've never managed to get sound recording to work on my Ubuntu desktop. Good luck with that.

    2) You can try debugging things with powertop. I'm not sure this would be very helpful, though. My brother's netbook gets like five hours plus of battery life on Ubuntu, and from what I've heard it's usually comparable to Windows (although maybe worse), so I don't know what the problem would be. Does it really perform so much worse than Windows does? Google around for advice, I guess.

That doesn't sound like it would work on Ubuntu . . .

Thanks Magpie, but in win 7 even my subwoofer works, the problem is in Ubuntu.

Sim the battery problem is really what I wrote, I have 1 minute of battery life than it hibernates. I actually have hibernation problems the pc won't come back... but that is solved by not letting it hibernate, or to enter any power saving state.

Well the sound is really annoying, Do you have any advice on how to install those things? I went to the ubuntu forums, and well, I didn't understood a thing, software especially linux isn't one of my strong points.

    Thank you all

You don't mean it actually drains your battery in one minute, do you? Like it goes from 100% to almost 0% in literally sixty seconds, so then you can't start the computer at all? That shouldn't be physically possible without a short-circuit (and maybe not even then).

I can't help with the sound, I'm afraid. Best bet is to try a different version and hope it works. Maybe wait a few months and try Ubuntu 10.10, or try the latest Fedora or something. If it worked with 9.x, you can stick with that. This support tends to get better with time.

Oh no I had to remove the 9.xx because of the lack of support for the gpu, mobile gpus are a pain in the drivers department, although support is getting better.

Sim it don't consume the battery, it instantly warns me after I plug it out, that it will hibernate, and do so in 1 minute.

But I do think that some damage was done to the battery since I lost a good half hour of it within windows.

This may be a long shot, but have you checked the power management options? They regulate what the laptop does when the lid is closed/power is unplugged/battery life is at X, etc. Perhaps something is not set quite right there.

Yes I have, I have disabled all the power management options, since if the pc hibernates/sleep, I can't turn it on.
