    Default Saxon: Total War (Idea)

    This is just an idea, I have no mad mod skills to boast of, and until my exams finish in 2 weeks time, no time to organize such a mod. I have a feeling many will just direct me to VI2 or Norman Invasion, but my idea is different.

    Starting 458 AD, based on the Saxon invasion of Britain and the formation of the Kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons, and their struggles for regional supremecy.

    It would also focus on the native, "Romano"-Britons, and their Pict/Celtish neighbours, and their struggles against the invaders and their native neighbours. Would also include the rise of Christianity into Britannia.

    This mod would have nothing to do with the "Vikings," and will end before the historic first raid of the Vikings (around 850 AD). I'd try to push for as realistic as possible a battle system (I have a few ideas about that), with as much historical accuracy as possible.

    Factions include;
    *Romano-British (?)
    *Wessex (Winchester)
    *Sussex (Selsey)
    *Essex (London)
    *Kent (Canterbury)
    *Mercia (Tamworth)
    *Bernicia (Bamburgh)
    *Deira (York)
    *East Anglia (?)
    *Dalraida (?)
    *Fortriu (?)
    *Alba (?)
    *Gwynedd-Powys (Degannwy)?
    *Gwent (Caerwent)
    *Dumnonia (?)

    Obviously, the map would centre around Britannia and the isles surrounding it.



    Just some nice maps I found while browsing

    If I do get around to making this, it would be based either on BI, or preferably Alex, for better AI.

    Thats the basics, all I'm asking is if their is a large enough interest base for a mod like this, and if so, are their any talented modders/historians/mappers out their that'd be prepared to help me out (as I've said, the most modding I've done is snippets in the Desc. sections)?

    sounds like a good idea... i can do some skinning and recently made a small mod by myself called Belgae: TW, which added a two new factions (belgae, epirus) so i have some experience modding most txt files...
    i havent made a map in a long time but i could give it ago!
    maybe you could include part of ireland or northern gaul for a couple of extra factions.


    (p.s. the skins in belgae tw are only recolours but i have 3ds max and can make more advanced skins, as i know how to texture map models)

    EDIT: oh yeah, im new here but have been at rtw heaven for a bit!

    I'd be glad of your help, I'll PM you once I have a bit of free time (will have alot of it soon).

    On Ireland, I'm in two minds. If I can find two decent kingdoms in the time period (not up on my Irish history, my grand-dad would be ashamed), I'd include them. And as for Northern Gaul, it's feasable, include the Kingdom of Brittany and an outpost of the Kingdom of the Franks, and it may be in business.

    As it is my first mod, I don't want it to get too complicated. I think when we get around to starting the mod, it'd be better for the initial release just to have the factions above balanced and fine-tuned. We could add the other areas (Ireland and Northern Gaul), but leave them as rebels until a second release? Just an idea.

    I will need a few 3D modders for skins, a 2D artwork modder, a mapper and later on a few play-testers. I'll also need a few people who know what their doing with txt_ and descr_ files.

    You might want to check out Arthurian: Total War. It sounds like your project and ATW have a lot of things in common.

    You proved me wrong!

    I know of Arthurian Total War, I quite like the mod. My focus is more on the Angles, Saxons and Jutes and the individual Kingdoms that came about. I think they focus more on the native Britons and Celts.

    I think they would say they focus on everyone equally. Anyhow, the two projects have so much in common that it would be kinda silly (and probably impossible) to try and find enough capable RTW modders to undertake this from 0. Perhaps you could arrange the creation of a sub-mod, using ATW as a base and then changing things to your liking... Even if not a sub-mod, perhaps you could get permission at least for the map or some units...

    I'm slowly getting a feeling that every second mod started recently is about dark age Britannia. Too much. I would rather give you a tip to contact with The Last Kingdom team and to realize your idea as TLK sub-mod. You would have half job done and could speed the final release of TLK. So everybody would win, including players

    Hey Apollyon, I've started a mod in the same period, isn't that crazy? I myself am a Celticist, and a King Arthur fan. Perhaps together we could make an acurrate sub-mod of ATW, me being the Celtic expert, you the Germanic, and instead of being Saxon focused, it could be Saxon invasion focused with the player (as the Saxons) using numerical superiority and brute infantry strength to fend off the deperately small but powerful britons with their partially Roman infantry and extremely deadly cavalry. Naturally they'll be playable too. Look up my thread Pendragon: Total War. Let's talk, see what we can do.

    I figured I am obligated to help in anyway I can. I am learning to model but i'm not amazing. I can text mod quiet efficiently as well. The reason I feel obligated, well...with a last name like Saxon, you kinda have to help with these kinds of things

    Well, I can text mod pretty well, like campaign stuff effectively and model decently. Not really able to be much a help for a historian cause I don't have access to any form of university library but I could try
