Steam?

Hi,
This is my first post here so hello to everyone.
I've had the game for a couple of months now and i really like it. When i bought it i had to bring it in to work with my base unit to get it steam validated as i'm not on the net at home. Can i ask, do i need to go to steam periodically to get updates or anything. Which means lugging my base unit into work, or could i for instance download any updates onto a usb stick and take it home.
Forgive my ignorance but i've never used steam before this..

You'll need to periodically connect steam

updates are not transferable to a usb drive, they are installed right on the spot

this is not meant to be a reply to the above question, but I dont know where else to post it: can some one tell me if it is possible to play NTW without using "STEAM"? I dont care for this setup at all.
