Hey guys. Just re-installed Rome Gold and decided to start with a BI campaign. I did not really ever get into BI when it first came out. Any suggestions for a fun campaign?
Thanks!!![]()

well if your looking for a challange you could do the Western Roman Empire, because literally everybody hates them and even the eastern romans will turn on you if your not doing well. Pretty much all the other factions are alot easier except mabe the saxons because you will make no money with them.
Near the center of the map are many barbarian factions, many of which can and will go horde. When they do, all the hordes generally move to France, although sometimes the Huns will end up in northern Italy. Its always fun to pick a faction and just tear through the Western Roman empire, or you can try to hold your homeland and fight against both barbarians and romans.
In the east, the eastern romans and sassanids can be pretty fun to play with, since you dont kneed to worry about the hordes too much. They sometimes go into greece, but they never go to antolia or further south. I like the eastern romans more then sassinids because you Do have to worry about two front wars and you cant concentrate on one specific enemy.
but then again the sassinids have war elephents![]()

awesome. thanks man!
i may try the WRE. how hard are they? should one maybe start on medium or hard instead of VH?
If played intelligently, they're actually pretty manageable. However, their initial setup is anything but, so you need to do some serious shuffling in the first few turns - don't try to hold on to everything, like the actual Romans did.
Then, I've never run then on Very Hard, so I can't really talk on that point.
WRE can easily be considered one of the hardest factions i think, because you have huge expanses of land, hordes coming in, non-horde factions attacking, your cities rebeling, and you dont have enough money to really fix any of your problems initially. The trick is getting going, but once you do the campaign is alot easier. (especially since the romans can produce the best soldiers in the world with so many cities, comitetenses (spelled wrong lol) and the guards replacing preatorians own.)
If you havent played barbarian invasion before i suggest starting on defult medium, just to see how you do. If it seems really easy then of course move up, if it seems a bit hard then you have found a good point to start playing at.

Western Roman can indeed be a hassle starting faction if seeking to avoid early campaign headaches and grief. Eastern Roman a quieter life and more enjoyable...except for playing in distinctly unmilitary looking girly pink.
i thought they were purple.... but the parthians, now they're girly pink.

Oh! Like the Scots!

Looking for fun, then it is the Eastern Roman Empire that you should go for! They are constantly at war, their eastern front against the Sassanids is in permanent state of war, then some hordes will cross the Danube and head towards Constantinople for the ultimate prize, and finally your former brethern of Western Roman Empire would attack you soon enough. All the while your own generals will rebel and form their own faction which will give you headaches. Plus, there is that charm of authenticity and historical continuation when you play ERE, you just going to love it!
Personally, I would recommend the Berbers....they have an interesting campaign
thanks guys! tried the WRE. What a mess! Not sure if I am in the mood for that right away hehe. Maybe a good challenge down the road. I am leaning towards the ERE now.![]()
It is quite a bit easierjust dont let the sassanids take antioch....

Try the Western Empire if you like a challenge. For a easier faction try there Eastern brothers or the Sassinids.
the franks are also a fun faction to play and an easy way to get back into B.i.
My first BI faction was the Alemanni, and it went really well. I've recently started a Sassanid campaign which I'm enjoying immensely, I find the "pre teched up" settlements in BI to be quite nice since you don't have that period of having to build tier 1 and 2 buildings before you get anything worthwhile. The Sassanids are probably one of the easiest factions to play since you can spam horse archers from the get go, but it does take some of the fun out. The Franks, as mentioned are also excellent. I've yet to make a WRE campaign work, so that's my next stop.
does anyone know a way to make factions have less towns/cities i dont like being overwellmed by having like 10-15 settlements i like starting with 2 maybe 3 settlements just so it doesent take forever to get to turn 10
Oh and its on vista

Well you can sell everything off, move all of your units out and possibley scrap them, and cane the taxes all the way to maximum so they rebel. This is more appealing than handing them over to another faction which you could do via diplomacy, but as Romans they won't go grey, but rather will form a new faction that will pretty much be obsessed with taking down your own. I've been considering something similar for starting a Western Roman campaign.
ok then i really dont feel like spending 20 mins a turn on easten/western romans
