    Default Tactical Retreat

Just wondering how to make a tactical retreat. I'm KH. After failing an ambush attempt against a large but weak Roman army, they fled the battlefield before a single arrow or stone could be thrown. They fled the field and now my army's ambush position is forfeit. They then followed up with a counter attack supported by an reserve army. Now my one army although slightly maintaining a number advantage...is strategically in a bad position. I want to retreat. But as I tried what the Romans have done previously I find that the "withdraw" button is not highlighted and cannot be activated. I tried to withdraw units as groups and as individuals but to no avail.

So my question is how do I organize a retreat while on the battlefield?

Also I forgot to mention that when I was attacked...I had 2 out of 3 options available. Fight Battle/Auto Resolve & withdraw was not a highlighted option to be activated. What can/should I do?

If you can't retreat on the campaign map (i.e. out of movement points), you can't retreat on the battlefield. What should you do? Take down as many as you can, even if you lose. But hey, it's the AI.

That's also a very important point (good job grant). Depriving the enemy of nobility is always fun.

The retreat system always seemed half baked, in a number of ways. You can't pick which direction your men flee in, groups of horsemen don't get the budge on infantry laden armies, etc

And other posters are right, assassinating the nobility is always a good idea and more meaningful than killing easily replaced troops.

just had that happen to me in a chartagenian game, was sieging a lusotanni province (king inside), with some 1800 basic iberian troops, suddenly a 2600 man large army, led by the heir, appears (had pressed end turn), reinforcing the 800 already inside. Couldn't retreat, so made a last stand against celtiberians, elite shocks and some 400 cavalry (mine numbering 100).

the great general Hasdrubal fell there, but took both the heir and king with him (well, his bodyguard killed the heir, the king charged my spearmen along with 200 gallish cavalry, he broke my line, but died doing it).

managed to take some kill some 1500 in total (they had about 900 "revived" after the battle :/)

I'm sensing sarcasm here.. no idea why the hell the prince turned up
the king was sheer luck, can be ascribed to ai stupidity .. he had 100 bodyguards, only managed to kill around 50 of those, normally the leader is the last to die, but appereantly he diddin't

The leader isn't normally the last to die. There are so many men on the field that there's always someone standing after the leader dies. They rout and he can't bring em back haha. No sarcasm. If you're so good, you should play online. I'll bring my king AND my prince.

You did nothing wrong, it was only that other guy who came here acting like he was a grizzled retired veteran who would come back in action just to beat you.
