    Default Cretan Archers ....

I took over Crete fairly early on in my Macedon campaign and built up the two cities, with the hope that I'd be able to recruit and retrain Cretan archers from at least one of them but even with the archery buildings max'd out its not possible to do so. Isn't that a bit strange, esp you'd expect any of the Greek factions to be able to do this?? Will this still be the same in RS2 ?

Lucikly I've got to really like the barbarian archers a lot .. at half the price, and just as good, so I'm not missing the Cretan ones too much, although I'd take Syrian Archers any time!

I agree. I was hoping that one of the Crete cities would be able to train Cretan Archers. It becomes a real hassle keeping my merc archers from taking casualties, especially when I fight in the east against Armenia and Parthia who have too many horse archers which I can't kill fast enough before they do a little damage to my archers.

As archers, I think Syrians > Cretan > Barbarian. Cretans just seem to have more ammo though but less armor than either.

I don't think that Cretans have the long range trait, but the barbarians and Syrians do.

    The cretans are cretins.

I find that Roman Auxiliary archers aren't so prone to dropping like flies. Play as Rome!

^Yup, it's more of a fighting style. For though for AOR purposes, I usually make them available in also in southern Greece and the west tip of Turkey

Syrian and Barb merc archers are better. And you do realize that some Auxilia Archers are historically recruited from Crete right?

Although oddly, in battle when you select Cretan archers, I'm pretty sure they say "Archers of Crete"

Either they're saying they're men of the Cretan style or CA not being historically accurate

yep.. I'm with you on the Syrian/Barb archers being better .... Personally I think the Syrian's are the best .. esp against those pesky Parthians!

Playing as Rome - one can get very early Barb archer from across the Adriatic Sea. Just build a ship and put a useless general on it and purchase these cheap and very effective archer.

Helps tremendously when fighting these stacks of rebels in the North.

Definitely agree with you there, TTRouble. Syrians are amazing against those annoying horse archer factions.

You can easily edit the files to allow the Greco factions to recruit them...
The Cretan archers are a fantastic lot, but they arent as heavily armoured as the barbarians.

As far as I know, Cretan archers does not come from Crete. Cretan stands for style of fighting. Thats the reason why you can train them outside the Crete.
