Default Question for KGCM fans: did you buy NTW?

    Hey guys

I was just wondering how many KGCM and H,H,B fans decided to buy NTW? I ask because I am so familiar with some of you who have been posting here for many years. And I am interested to know who moved onto NTW and who stuck with M2TW Mods please don't move this thread to the NTW forums.

Personally I decided to give NTW a miss in the end for the following reasons below.

    1) No Grand Campaign, yep this ones pretty big for me, the Napoleon campaigns just look far too short with not enough replayability. I just don't see this expansion being worth the money or the time personally. Total War has always been about world map conquest for me and not a historical reenactment set over 3 small campaigns.

    2) Unit sizes, this was another major problem I had with the whole expansion. CA were just not prepared to raise the unit sizes and increase the battles sizes like they should have done for wars in this time period. Note, I am only talking about moderate increases to unit sizes here and not expecting battles to have as many as 40000 men I understand that technically you cant have real size battles. But sorry, I just could not take this expansion seriously with such tiny Napoleonic battles.

    3) ETW patch 1.6, after waiting more than a year for a patch to come out that would fix the damn game properly and make it playable. I now find out what an excellent game this should have been at release when I am finally able to play it without serious bugs and CTD's. I even find ETW very tough on VH/VH and prefer to play it on H/H And there is such a ton of replayability in this game, especially if you use the mod that unlocks all the minor factions. Anyway this brings me back to point 1, thanks very much CA but I love the Grand Campaign. And I still want to get my moneys worth out of this game before I drop it and pick up a new TW game.

    4) No moddability, whats even the point in buying a TW game now when they are so hard to mod? I just don't see the point really, modding has always been part of the fun for me in these games. What am I supposed to do once I've beat the 3 Napoleon campaigns? How many of us replayed the American independance campaign in ETW once we completed it? non. So really theres only multiplayer which can keep me entertained. But I am not just going to pay £30 for a multiplayer.

Thats my main gripes with the expansion and why I boycotted it. How about you fans? Were you ever interested in the warfare of the Napoleonic age? And what are your main reasons for buying the game/not buying the game?

    thanks,
    Dave

I'm going to get NTW....but only once its cheaper (thankyou amazon uk) and I also recently fell upon the delights of Roma Surrectum, and how I missed this earlier I havn't a clue. Still havn't finished a campaign of KGCM and my ETW darthmod is turning interesting, especially since the new release; except, I have a mod clash... but thats another story.
I can't say I'm all for huge unit sizes, the current ones do me fine, and I do enjoy a bit of good-old story line play. But as to how hard it would have been to dump the ETW map on the NTW engine baffles me- It probably would have taken them a month, and I'm pretty sure the average TW player would have been willing to pay a further £5 if this was added on as an optional DLC download; albeit a large one.
So there beith my humble opinion (if it maketh any sense)

i have bought napoleon (i dont post here but i love your mod).

1.i do agree that the game is not as big as Empire, but it is even more replayable and a lot more polished, since CA focused on a smaller scope the game is a lot better it has a few failures but those dont hurt the game too much.

2.well i agree, CA could make the unit sizes a lot bigger, but that´s what mods are for:http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=338786
this one has all line infantry units with 300 men, this make things a lot better.

3.yeah empire is actually fun now, nothing i can say here, if you prefer empire stick with empire.

4.there are mods that unlock all factions, there are mods that change the egyptian campaign, there is even a mod that changed the era to WW1 (it is really good)you can always try those.

I bought it and played MP for quite a while and loved it. Single player not so much and ultimately fell in love with KGCM again after release of HHB. ETW is an excellent game and I of course long for some of the better NTW features in an ETW size and scope game.

I dont like how NTW plays much faster than ETW. I also dislike how they got rid of ranked fire in favor of having everybody in the unit fire willy nilly even if guys are standing in front of them. Also they dumbed down the tech trees. I suppose they did a lot of this to accomodate for a multiplayer campaign and to speed up multilayer battles, but it did not have a positive effect on SP.

I wish i had ETW mechanics in NTW.

Most interesting, thanks very much for letting me know about these mods.

I was thinking of buying ETW and NTW but was scared off due to many lackluster reviews. So i'll stick with mtw2 and might slide back to mtw and rtw.
Well ETW at release was one of the worst PC games I have ever bought in my life. So you were right not to waste your time buying this game earlier on. However now that it has been fixed and the AI is also greatly improved I would say it was well worth the money. Friends have also told me how much they enjoy NTW but still I have put off buying it for a while now.

Still playing KGCM or actually HHB and it is my favorite simulation on my computer. Did not nor do I intend to purchase NTW or any simulation based on this time period. I prefer the medieval and earlier time frames or WWII or later. I would love to see a Rome Total War II with all the latest improvements made by CA but I guess that is just wishful thinking.

I agree that the ability to mod a simulation is a must. I understand the the origanal developers cannot please every end user and should make allowances for personal preferences. If KGCM had not come along MTW2 would just be another box on the shelf gathering dust. Thanks to Dave, Soul and everyone else that has made this mod what it is today.

Dont shy away from ETW, if you don't mind the time period, ETW is the best of the series.

    Agreed strategy/campaign-wise
If you dont buy it, you are missing out bad. (and I would also recommend darthmod- much more realistic but doesnt detract from gameplay appeal)

meh- world war 1 without proper trenches/tanks/some planes= not world war 1
They should probably have done something like the american civil war

Nah I won't buy it. Still have a bit of a hangover from ETW. Just ran too damn slow for me (1-1,5 min campaign turn wait time, got worse later on despite a decent pc). And the absence of a grand campaign is a big letdown. I usually only play the grand campaign which means I don't really like NTW.
