this is an example of some strategy

A- axethrowers,
I-infantry(basic or defensive, good to have some Vault Wardens),
C- crossbowmen (sorry, crossbowdwarves ) ,
OI- offensive infantry,some Axemen (axedwarves

) of Erebor or Dragonslayers, sometimes Guards of Khazad-Dum
Axethrowers have the second strike after the crossbows, they deal much damage to enemy infantry, esp if it has much armour (they have freaking ap attribute!)
when enemy inf close you just retreat with axethrowers and crossbows, positioning them to fire better, and have your infantry hold the enemy, and after that move your axethrowers to strike from the rear or flank

A ENEMY A
- I-I-I-I-I-I
- C-C-C-C
offensive inf could prevent enemy from striking into your rear or advance into the enemy's rear
meanwhile your cavalry (good to have one or two units, but no more) run through the field chasing rooters or archers
after a shower of axes combined with the strike of your offensive infantry.... just carrion will be left
