    Default Skinning Problem

First of all, please forgive my ignorance, I'm new to 3D editing.
Right, I've begun to work on a Medieval conversion for BI in my spare time, and naturally need new unit models. Being the lazy and incompetent bastard that I am, I decided to take units directly from M2TW and import them in.
It seems to be going decently - I used mod tools to get the model into 3ds Max. It opened and appears to be pretty normal, only in technicolour.

However, I cannot apply a texture to it. Not even the original texture, which I converted to a .dds file. The Material editor that seems to work with RTR units refuses to skin the M2 longbowmen.

Does anyone have any idea what to do?

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I'm not familiar with MTW2 models and not to offend your intelligence or anything but did you press the blue and white cube button just above the bitmap button?

If not, make sure a bodypart is selected doing this, and if you pressed that button and texture hasn't shown up yet, press the third button from the left that's on the same line as the blue and white cube (The one just left of the "X" button).

    Ooooh...
No worries, you can't insult what isn't there.

Right, texture is now showing up, but is badly mangled. Trying to remap it.
Thanks for the help, and sorry for my idiocy.
