Wil you play the game? the game of thrones.
Personally, i have serveral fighting strats.
If i have light fast infantry ill be aggresive and use my calvery to flank around.
But of couse alot of factions don't have calvary or not alot.
So most of the time defensive. Unless im outnubered and need to be agressive and "outmanoeuvre" them, in order to win.
I play alot of Napoleon total war thats why i like calvary and in that game you have to use them as a flankinf force or else they will be slaughtered.![]()
Well normally when I attack I fight offense, and when I'm attacked I fight defense. So I assume that means both.I normally play according to each factions strengths and weaknesses along with the strengths of the faction I am playing. I assume you're probably going to get a similar answer from everyone.

Clearly has his priorities straight.
Mordor
Versus humans or Elves
My Olog Hai charges in first.
My Nazguls charges in from the rear.
My Uruk halberds advance in behind the trolls, slaughtering all opposition that remains.
My Uruks cover the halberds flanks while they do their work.
This tactic usually results in a 1000+kills, 50+/-loss clear victory.
Show no mercy, give no quarter; obliterate them all!

And NO, my avatar is the coat of arms from the Teutonic Knightly Order because they're awesome.
My strategy is pretty simple. I select my units and right-click on the ennemy.
Works almost everytime too!!!
Yeah works most of the time in empire
I usually fight defensive. I play Rohan. If I have a royal guard in shield wall I wait for them to charge but if I don't, I wait for them to come near me while my missile cavalry harass them and when they're near I charge my infantry. I flank them with cavalry but I leave some space so they won't fight to death. I can't flank them with infantry cuz you are usually out numbered. Place your archers in front first then when they get close enough, put them behind but not too close to your infantry because if the enemy tries to flank you, use your archers to kill them, no one will survive. Happened to me once in VH/VH. Heroic victory!!

I usually wait for the enemy to come close to me, then attack them head on or simply wait. I try and flank as much as I can with both cavalry and infantry.
If the enemy is just holding his ground, then I move forward and take the fight to him, preferably striking from both his center and flanks.

I usually play Gondor.
vs Mordor:
I open up with my archers targeting their spear units before anything else.
I like arranging my swordsmen and spearmen at the front in a semicircle formation so I surround them when the melee begins. Keep my cavalry behind until all or most of their melee units are engaged then I quickly move around the main battle and charge into their ranged units. Once I've killed most of them I charge into the rear of their remaining melee forces which usually results in a complete rout in a matter of seconds. Then I take my general and slaughter as many as I can with him to give him stat boosts.
vs Harad:
Open up with archers on their cavalry before they can charge. My army is much more spearmen heavy than vs Mordor but I use a similar semicircle formation to trap their cavalry which kills them very quickly. Then it's just a matter of obliterating their far inferior infantry.
Normally i just put my spearmen in the front to hold the line at the beginning, with archers a moderate distance behind so they wont have to shoot up, and the rest of my infantry behind my archers so they wont get hit by the enemy archers if they have any if not i just keep my reserves right behind the line. then i place my cavalry on the flanks, going behind the enemies line picking off their skirmishers, then proceding to charge their line until they route. bringing up my reserve infantry to the line after i pick off their skirmishers early in the fight.

Depends what fraction you play and against what enemy. If enemy have a lot of cavalry then I put 3 -4 generals in first line after them spear units and then hevy infantry and after arcers.Hevy cavalry I keep in flangs to secure retriting of my generls after their atack on arcers and provocated enemy general.Against fractions who don't have cavalry I use arcers in center cavalry in flangs and some infantry far behind -but all depends what units you have to yours disposal.
Attack brings glory, defence wins the game.
It really depends on the faction I'm playing. As a good faction, I play defensive as well in battle as in the strategy map. That's closer to lore and also adds to the immersion.
When playing evil factions I attack all the time and play really aggressive.
My strategy?
I have defensive playing style, that's the way I play total wars.
If the enemy comes to me, I'll wait. If they hold their ground, I'll charge (sometimes I change my strategy).
My tactic is pretty simple:
I have at the start of the fight archers in front of the other units, so they will have clear shots.
Then I have spearman, and behind them other melee infantry.
As the enemy moves their archers to shoot on my archers, I use my cavalry to take advantage of their "skirmish mode". They can't fire as my cavalry runs near themAnd of course I kill many of them if I catch them before they run back to their lines.
When the enemy gets closer to my lines, I put my archers to the back of my infantry units (still firing).
At this point I move my cavalry behind their lines to kill their remaining archers (and use hit and run tactic on the enemy lines).
If the enemy has cavalry I use my spearman to kill them, moving them to the spots where their cavalry will charge.
When the lines meet my infantry will be on guard mode (especially with Gondor) or before the lines start to fight I use my charge bonus and make them charge just a few steps (they won't get tired too fast, and enemy looses more men).
At this point I still use my archers if they have arrows left (if the enemy has cavalry left I will kill the rest of them now with my archers).
And now I charge in the back of the enemy lines with my cavalry.
Surround -> they will be overrun -> mass retreat -> clear or heroic victory.![]()

A Eruchîn,u-dano i faelas a hyn an uben tanatha le faelas.
i want to attack always when i play with rohan, and to defend when i play with dwarves
When I play as Gondor I usually lengthen my first lines of infantry so as not to get overwhelmed.I put more units (usuallu spearmen) at the sides so as to beat their flanks quickly and surround them as they usually charge for my senter. Archers behind shooting and cavalry (if available) at the sides to surround them and kill their archers or retreating units.
My favourite way as Gondor is to have two units of citadel guards in shieldwall, and strech them very thin and put them in guard mode. this creates a long wall, which I put my other infantry and archers behind. I like to have 2 or more swan knights as well, far out on the flanks. When the enemy charge the spearmen, I use the other infantry to plug any gaps or weak points. If nothing else, this slows them and pins them down really well, so that the swan knights can get in some charges on the flanks. It's harder when the enemy have trolls, of course!
