Default Steam, how do i install games to a different directory?

    Title says it all.

Running out of hard drive space on my drive and I want to put the less hard drive thrashing games onto my larger, but slower, disc. Games like Civilization 4. Is this even possible?

If you're using Windows Vista, 7, or Mac OSX you might be able to use a symbolic link to make steam think stuff on another drive is in your steamaps folder. But, I've never had to do it for steam, so I haven't thought it all through.

Unfortunatly i'm pretty sure everything has to be passed through Steamapps.

You could if you're trying to save space just uninstall games you're not using. If you have no bandwidth cap you can just redownload them, if you do, use Steams backup facility, buy some cheap DVDs and burn the backups onto them.

This is a good idea, i'm going to try it.

Well the thing is I have a performance hard drive for games and another hard disk for storage. Some games that have long loading times and a lot of things like "levels" I want to keep on my main hard disk. Games like Civ 4 that only load when the game starts save games and you dont see it while you are playing can go to the slower disk.

Let me know how it goes. I genuinely interested in the possibility.

    Moved to The Basement.
"Muscovy", as its rulers have previously called it, is a sleeping giant, with age-old traditions and ways of doing things. Here, the feudal way of life has become so entrenched that the serfs are as tied to the land as cattle, and with almost as few rights. It is a vast, deeply conservative and religious country: Mother Russia and the Orthodox Church are the two pillars of national belief. The Tsar may be the father of his people, but by tradition and practice he is a stern parent. Ivan the Terrible was well named, and he has not been the only ruler with an iron will. Russia is the "Third Rome". The last bastion of Orthodox Christianity.

move your steam folder to the other harrdrive, uninstall steam, install steam on other harrdrive, overwrite steam folder with the one you copied

Only way is to move steam all together. As simple as that, I oddly did so without uninstalling any games, just moved the entire steam foldier into a new harddrive and had to make new shortcuts, ran steam and well steam did the rest and oddly everything worked out fine but Empire Total War which was the only game I had to uninstall/reinstall. No clue if that will work after more resent changes on steam though anymore. I found it annoying that you couldn't install games into different directors but, oh well. Main harddrive doesn't mean the game will run faster, I actually have a harddrive on my computer specifically for computer games, one for multimedia, and one for applications and windows xp main one. I see nonthing losing performance by running on something other than the main one.
