I don't see at all why that would be unreasonable. Especially during the medieval period, the Papacy was far more a political position than a religious one. Wouldn't have surprised me at all if one of those popes were secretly atheist.

After years of preaching peace, it must seem odd to start authorising Crusades and Inquisitions - and by extension the deaths of countless thousands. For holy men, the medieval popes had quite a lot of blood on their hands. Maybe Nicholas III just got really jaded.
Reminds me of that Blackadder episode where Blackadder (a blatant atheist) is appointed Archbishop of Canterbury.
