In Napoleon Total War, if you pause just at the right time, you can get that effect, so I doubt it's edited.

agreed...if you have particle effects on ultra, it produces a ripple/streaky-distortion with the explosion

I know it`s unorthodox and weird, but this is my most recent moment of zen.

Been recently trying out Europe in Conflict mod for NTW, which fixes sieges among many other things. I NEVER had losses like this in ANY TW game up to now. I think this screen show epicness of the mod:
