Gained 20 Gigas, im scared

See its not so much of a problem, but im pretty freaked, i have an 111 gb hard drive, which i had filled up to the point were i had only 9 gb left of free space, so i decided to eliminate somethings, a couple of mods and 1 or 2 programs, after it was left i saw it gained abot 2 gb, wasnt much but i would handle it. So i lend it to my mom and she checks her email and everything and turns it off, next day i have 33 gb available! but all my files are intact (or so it seems) were the hell did all that space appear from, no way it was from the mods and programs it was way to little! whats the answer?

I have Vista Ultimate.

There's not really any way to tell after the fact. It might be that you had lots of temporary files that something cleaned out, or who knows what.

I have that same issue sometimes, with Vista. Sometimes I get more and sometimes less space. I just accept it tbh. If it gets to be too little hard drive space I just do a factory default restore. Yes, I am computer illiterate.

Yeah but the problem is what cleaned them out, i have been checking something about some new vista update that freed alot of space, up to 40 gb, maybe its that?

The thing is it alot of information and i dont want to get carried away and fill it up more just so vista gets all wacky on me.

The only time I gain that much space is when I delete my system restore and shadow copies. Not sure what it is for you though.

Its a bit late now but for future reference i use this little program from time to time:

It conveniently shows where all you disk space is being used, which is pretty useful since I started using a laptop space is at a premium.

So in future if something goes missing you should have more of an idea of what exactly was using the space to begin with (especially if its something like 33gb)

That happened to me when I clicked on "compress harddrive to save space". Dont know what exactly it compressed but it worked.
