    Default Ubuntu hates me... help?

1 year after my last lackluster experience with Ubuntu I decided I've give it another shot with version 10.04

I just completely finished installation and it stated it needed to restart, it began preparations to shut down, spit out the CD then spewed out a long long list of similar errors.

    One Eaxmple:

    [1493.119386] end_request: I/O error, dev sro, sector 505952

Now it just stays on that screen with the long list of errors that all look the same with different numbers in the brackets and "sectors".

    Any ideas?

Does that drive boot to Windows? Those appear to be hard drive errors, try running a SMART test on the drive.

Drive had been running XP for the last 8 years I took it off an old computer when I built a new system to replace it for someone. I can't figure out why it would wait to spill that whole string of errors until after installation was complete and it was simply restarting. Guess I have a lot to learn about on this OS.

Amazingly I can get into Ubuntu now, even though I had all those errors, after snooping around the only thing I find amiss is that it shows I have 746MB of RAM even though I installed a 1GB stick. Could those errors possibly been referring to the RAM? System seems to be working fine though now.....

Basically this is a brand new build save for the HDD and PSU (whole system cost $150 by supplementing used parts)

EDIT: just ran SMART short test and it says the drive is fine.

I had the same issue with the newest version and my disks are all fine. I had installed it from a USB so I thought perhaps I messed that process up.

Did you use install the x64 or x86 version?

    Ubuntu 10.04 x86 off a CD.

I'm really liking it. v9 just wasn't working well for me but this version is slick.

Yeah, this kind of thing still shows sometimes on the edges, even in the best Linux distros. Annoyingly, there's often no reliable way to capture the error message. You sometimes have to resort to taking a picture, and I've had even that not work (because it reboots too fast).

In this particular case, /dev/sr0 is your CD drive, not your hard disk. The CD drive was giving errors, maybe because of the drive itself or maybe because of the CD. If you posted a full screenshot, maybe I could say more. If it doesn't come back and doesn't seem to hurt anything, chalk it up to an oddity of Linux and move on. They'll probably have fixed it in a few years.
