I remember from when I was active in this forum that you were a nvidia fan so I'll say go with the gtx480. It runs hotter than the 5870 but who cares since its faster.

Between the 2 I'd go for the GTX 480. The ROG's performance and features doesn't warrant the price. If it was a different 5870 I'd probably go for that then.
Just get a normal 5870, you'll be much happier with it... trust me.

If you read the newegg comments youll see lots of people commenting on the GTX 480 that they had the 5870 and sold it to try the 480 and wish they hadnt.. the performance wasnt as good.

i have a 260 right now, which plays 99% of games maxed but i want DX11 and better performance in ETW and NTW
Don't get the Asus Matrix.
It looked awesome and has great OC potential, but the reviews I've seen of it aren't flattering and it looks to be too expensive to be worth it.
The Nvidia cards seem to shine at DX 11 games much moreso than ATI ones, so even if every inch in my fanboy body is screaming "Sapphire Toxic 5870, HIS ICooler 5870, Asus 5870 V2, just get a friggin HD 5870 already!!", I'd probably suggest a GTX 480.
Zotac are releasing an AMP edition GTX 480 with a massive Zalman HSF. Three slots, but runs something like 20c cooler on load according to the techPowerUp review. You may want that, or the Palit dual fan cards, or you could just be patient and wait for other custom cooled cards from Nvidia's board partners.
What case do you have? If you have mid size case with a few 120mm fan I would worried about the heat a hd5970 and gtx480 pumps put and its effect on the rest of my system.
There's nothing wrong with the stock hd5870's, get one with a good warranty.
i have an Antec 300, but will be getting this case if i go Nvidia

Oh my lord, boy is that Element V overpriced. I don't care whether it's certified for Fermi cards, if you want a case that has decent video card cooling and a massive side panel fan, it's the HAF 932 or gtfo. Not to mention it's $100 cheaper.
Either one, but no 5970.
Jaketh asking if he should get an ATI card or Nvidia card is like 3 wolves and a sheep deciding what to eat. We all know the answer.
