    Default Hypaspistai...Good lord

Got back into RTR and DLed 6.2 and just began fighting the Macedons. Their Hypaspitai are seriously rigged, and are literally unkillable by anything save a cavalry charge, especially when they are assaulting walls. 40 of them can kill over 500 principes on walls.

What can be done about them, and if nothing can be done, how the hell do I nerf them? Even in open battle with units hitting them from all sides, it takes a massive cavalry charge to break them up.

I know, you can attack them from all sides and they can still kill you. Only way to effectivly deal with them I think is archer or javelin fire from behind.

At least they are weaker than BI berserkers...

Change their hitpoints from 2 to 1 in the export_descr_unit file. It'll make them more human.

They have two hitpoints? I'll rue the day my Roman armies have to deal with a triumphant Macedonia ruling over all Greece, like in my current game. Are there any other units like this that it might be more realistic to nerf?

they gave you that much trouble? wow... every time i engaged them i found they tended to hold on a single angle, and when you hit them from a rearish corner they crumbled like potato chips under a fat kid. just melted away.

in one battle, playing as the romans, using an army of 4 hastatii, 4 principes, 4 triarii, 4of those javelineers, and 2 gallic noble cavalry, with an avg of 2-3 bronze chevrons and silver armor/weapons, against a force of near equal numbers, but 1/3rd their army the hypaspitai, the A.I. couldn't handle the volume of pilums, redirected themselves to my hastatii, and i swung my triarii around to their flank, bringing 2 of them directly to the rear of the first unit. it folded like a bad poker player on acid, and allowed me to send the triarii to the next one in line, and shift the hastii into free fire mode, then the third went down, and i replace my hastatii with the principes and shifted the hastatii into skirmishing with the rest of their army which my cavalry had been harassing into standing still, and finally used the collapsing units to panic the rest of the army into flight.

worked easily enough. lost maybe 400 men total.

But they are though. You need really a lot of fire and manpower to get them. And! On the walls they are close to unstoppable.

not really, just a lot of flexibility in your tactics. i find their biggest weakness is they aren't adaptable enough, so if you keep changing the situation, eventually they just sort of start trying to wheel in place, and you can hit em almost with impunity.

course, human players are arses with em. they form em all into a 4 unit square with the guys pointing outwards, and march em in that formation around the map

Hypaspists were definately the cream of the crop when it comes to elite troops during the RTR timeperiod. However, they are a little too powerful currently. I can assure you they will be toned down in upcomming versions of RTR.

Also, for 7.0....we found literary evidence of another faction that used Hypaspists historically but does not currently have them in RTR. They will be added.

    Also....
The Spartans were nothing special during the RTR period. They did not compare to the Spartans of Leonidas and of the Pelopennesian War era.

No, these guys are really nuts. You could completely surround them, and their moral wouldn't break, and they'd rout you, even if overwhelmingly outnumbered. Javelins from the rear is really the only way to deal with them, and charging from the rear only works with heavy cavalry and provided they are sword weilding ones.

    ok....
    re:
whats the easyest way to kill a soldier nomather how tough he is?
yeah..arrows or javelins. since arows bounce off armour......yeah again. javelins.
javelins thrown at them frontal = lol@u so:
flank w/ javelins and kill them from behind till reduced number then they are easy prey for infantry or even better heavycavalry.tested.

Thats a given, but when it is the ONLY practical way to kill hypastpists, something isn't right.

imho a much more imba troop is cavalry archers.
try and fux w/ them. i think they are the real and only challenge of the game.

Completely surrounded dosen't mean much if they're not taking losses which is where cavalry comes in really useful. As the Greeks I was facing 3 Hypaspist units, 1 phalanx, 2 thracians and some other misc. units against my two hoplite units, peltast, 2 generals, ippiko and promodo cavalry. I put down the hoplite line 4 or 5 thick to pin them down to a place. After dealing with their general I raced all my units save my generals to the rear of the enemy engaging my hoplites who were now having hypaspist eat away at their flanks as they wrapped around. My javalin throwers focused on the phalanx(who had little enough armour to kill) and my Ippiko caught anything that retreated towards the city. My generals on the other hand repeatedly charged and pulled back from the hypaspist units on the flanks, they soon retreated, but not before one of my own hoplite units collapsed. I continued with the other group charging and pulling back until they retreated and followed one group in through the gates with the generals(the only cavalry that could take hits) they eliminated the stragglers and were done. Hypaspist are nasty buggers but they can be overcome with quick localized pressure on the unit to make it break, having hoplites to pin them down in the first place is immensly useful though.

Are the Hypaspists that you guys talking about swordsmen or phalanxmen? And do all Hypaspists in factions other than Macedonia have two hitpoints?
