Default Scandinavia - Consisten Union or Antiunion. What would the result be today?

    • What do you think would happend if Scandinavia would not become a union back in the middle ages?
      • Would it change the end result (today)?

    • What do you think would happend if Scandinava was still be a union today? Would it have more imperial traits or oppression for it's own "nations"?
Iceland? Greenland? Isle of Man? Orkney? Faroe Island? Shetland? Finland?

The black line is the most probable economic zone had there still been a unification today.

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

A continued union would have been best for everyone, not just Scandinavians. When you leave Danes alone for too long they get bored and start drawing.

A Nordic confederacy of some sort, with national autonomy but co-ordinated foreign and defence policy, may be even mutual labour markets, etc. Would be awesome and much better than the EU, assuming we get rid of the current political climate..

I think it is better, though, that the Kalmar Union fell apart. Sweden would eventually have dominated and begun to, in its centralistic fashion, integrate the other parts into a Greater-Sweden.
The common culture of a tribe is a sign of its inner cohesion. But tribes are vanishing from the modern world, as are all forms of traditional society. Customs, practices, festivals, rituals and beliefs have acquired a flut and half-hearted quality which reflects our nomadic and rootless existence, predicated as we are on the global air-waves.

I agree with Wilpuri, if it was too closely knit then it would be kind of like Sweden on steroids, but a loose confederation of those nations working together with joint initiatives that could span the whole group, socially, economically and militarily would be extremely properous in my opinion.
I'm not sure how that would be represented in the EU though, they could have joint representation if they were all investing in each other's interests.
