    Default Late European Armour (1400-1530)

    Hey there,

I was wondering if the mod team was going o develop realistic late period armor for the heaviest of knights. This might seem to be a minor topic but it certainly isn't. In every single mod I have seen out there I notice that the only factions with decent armoured men by the end of the game are France and Germany (Holy Romans). So I am posting this to put up some facts about factions that used and produce this heavy armor.

1.“Milanese” armour. Manufactured in Italy and exported to the rest of Western Europe. Used circa 1430 to 1500. Characterised by simple yet elegant appearance and curved surfaces allowing arrows, swords etc to glance off. It was normally worn with an armet type helmet. Was popular in Italy, France, Iberia. Made in northern Italy.

2.German “Gothic” armour. Manufactured in Southern Germany and exported only to the richest among Europe, such as the king's bodyguards for many western and some eastern kingdoms. Used circa 1460 to 1500. Characterised by ornate look with multiple grooves and fluting and ‘spiky’ appearance. Normally worn with a German style sallet. Was popular in Holy Roman Empire, Poland. Made in southern Germany.

3.English armour. Used circa 1450 to 1510. Had features of both Milanese and Gothic armour. Known only from funerary effigies and brasses as no actual examples survive. It was normally worn with an armet or a sallet. Covers entire body with plate armour, just as the other two types of armour. Made in souther England. Popular in England, its only know user.

    Sincerly yours, Marmot

Working on late armour isn't a high priority right now because the end date or our first release is 1453, but of course we hope to accurate armour for the entire span of the mod and for all factions. Here’s model of Milanese armour that Matko offered to let us use (but we haven't done any work on late units yet):

I see you have a great deal of stuff to do. That model seems to fit prefectly for the Milanese and I think that the vanilla model for Gothic knights with some extra details will do the job. Just remember England had it's own armor as well. Maybe for the second release you will add these units and maybe then it will be time to talk deeper about them. But great job with the mod and with the early units you have shown so far and good luck with the future high and late units which are (As far as I know) harder to do.

Attention, the above shown armours were only for the nobles to flaunt in parades. The armours used in battles were painted blue against corrosion (look to the medieval battle paintings).
